Help with Generous Universities

I need a university in the states that is willing to give:

Out of State tuition waiver

Good scholarships (50-100% scholarships)

based on academic acheivement.

My stats: 3.9 GPA/1200 SAT score (M + CR)

I need universities that award good Freshman scholarships to students with similar stats to mine. I'm already a High School graduate (2011) so I am ready to send my transcripts today!

A good example would be University of Texas at Arlington.

I am an American citizen but I am not a resident of any of the states.
Any help is deeply appreciated!

why not try privates instead of out of state publics… you’re more likely to get more money than public universities…

What are you planning on majoring in? there are lots of universities that give great scholarships - some are even full tuition too like USC, boston college, johns hopkins…

my suggestion is for you to look into the colleges that have good programs that you want to major in and look into the school through their website. the majority of them say what kind of scholarships they have and how much the scholarships give.

Are you sure about that? I mean getting admitted in a private university is tough enough; don’t you think my stats are a bit low for a scholarship that will cover out of state tuition AND fall below 10K dollars per year? Or do you think I have a chance?

I’m planning on majoring in Engineering. My first choice will be Petroleum Engineering, second probably Industrial Engineering.

well i mean… the only reason out of state tuition for public schools is because the state needs more money and they get the money from the kids paying out of state tuition.

though your sat score is average, you have a pretty good gpa.

if you live in the western part of the US have you ever considered any WUE schools? sorry i didn’t know you needed the financial aid to fall below $10K. But honestly, either way out of state public and privates are the same.

There are schools that give presidential scholarships (full tuition) to people with good stats. you have a pretty good gpa and an okay sat… but i think if you apply to a school with lower gpa averages than yours (like a 3.3-3.5) you could get the scholarship.

This isn’t guaranteeded, it’s just my opinion. I mean if you think about it… you should get it since your stats would be higher than the average.

purdue is good on engineering so is cal poly slo. but i’m not sure how they are on financial aid.

Does your school provide a college counselor? you should definitely sit down with them and ask.

but if you live in the western part of the US, definitely apply to WUE schools (University of Oregon, Western Washington U, University of Nevada)…

good luck

The OP is living overseas and isn’t a resident of any state - so WUE won’t help his situation.

Have you run any FAFSA calculators to see what your EFC will be?

It sounds like your EFC will be too high for Pell Grants, but you could get a 5500 student loan to supplement your $10k per year from your family. Frankly, you’re going to need that much just to pay for room, board, books, fees, etc and int’l travel costs.

Your SAT will likely prevent you from getting large scholarships from schools with engineering. A good GPA is good, but schools have lots of kids with strong GPAs and they’re not giving them all big scholarships. Schools use test scores to largely determine who gets the large scholarships. For you to get a large scholarship (like free tuition) your test scores need to be in about the top 10% of the school.

I just looked at UA-Huntsville (a regional univ with good engineering) and to get free tuition, you’d need at least a 1360. http://finaid.uah.edu/scholarships/2012-2013%20approved%20scholarship%20grid.pdf</a> At Alabama (the flagship) you’d get free tuition plus 2500 for a 1330 as an engineering major.

You provided UT-Arlington as a “good example,” but with your stats, you’d only get $6000 per year at a school with an OOS COA of about $30k.

If you could retest and get your scores up, then a school like Mississippi State might work for you. It has good engineering.

It’s hard to find school that have engineering, that also give large merit for a 1200 SAT.

Well actually if I get a scholarship from the university they would automatically consider my tuition as in-state tuition and reduce from that tuition the $6000 [Scholarships: Out of State Tuition Adjustment](http://wweb.uta.edu/ses/fao/content/scholarships/out_of_state_tuition_adjustment.aspx)
Thats what I meant by “1. Out of State tuition waiver”.

So I figured that since UT-Arlington is doing something like that maybe other universities are too. Maybe in this case my 1200 doesn’t seem too lacking?

What about some of the northern tier schools? Relatively inexpensive to start with.
