Hi, I intend to major in journalism or business but I really feel that my
foreign language teacher and science teacher are really the two people who know me the best. I know that their subjects are not really related to my major. However, I want to get recommendations from teachers who know me the best and who can give the most sincere evaluations. Would colleges dislike it if I got evaluations from teachers who taught unrelated subjects to my major?

Some colleges will say outright from what disciplines they want recommendations. Check each admissions website to find out. Business schools might want a math teacher’s rec.

Then, get recommendations from those required disciplines, but ALSO include the two teachers who know you best. In the common app, you will be able to select which recommendation goes to which school. If you can, use those best two. If you have to submit something different, you will already have it. Get to know those other teachers, by the way. When you ask for their recommendation, talk with them about your plans, dreams, ideas. so they aren’t writing about you in a general way. Ask them if they feel they could write a good recommendation for you, or is there more they would like you to do in their class first? You still have time to develop these relationships.

Typically it is better to have at least one language arts teacher and one math or science. Contact the school’s admission office to see if they have any specific requirements. If they don’t I would go ahead and ask teachers that will give you the best recs vs. a teacher who seems “appropriate” giving you a mediocre one.
