I am 13 years old, and even though I am pretty young, really looking forward to college. I really want to get into Carleton or Amherst, and to do so, I am going to have to work VERY hard. I would consider myself very smart, I take advanced math, and I am in a gifted and talented program at my school. I want to take as many AP/Honors classes as possible. I also went to a Spanish Immersion elementary school, so I think that I will start at spanish III. I could self study Geometry this summer, and then take Honors Algebra II next year. Then I could start off with AP Calculus AB. I have already taken basic physics, and biology, and I could self study earth science this summer also. I could take honors Physics, and then AP bio, and chem, and then AP physics. In history, I want to take AP Human Geo, then AP World History, AP US History, AP Macro/Micro Econ. I also want to take as many AP classes as I can in english. Outside of school, I swim on a highly ranked swim team, 2 hours every day, even weekends. I also love volunteering for community projects. Please let me know what you think I should do!

What are you interested in for a major/career? Pick ups ECs that are related to that field

for example, i am interested in computer science so i founded a computer science team at my school, and i intern under a cs professor and so on

I am pretty set on majoring in math or computer science, like a 70% math, 30% computer science. I actually want to be a math teacher! I really enjoy helping people, and math is one my favorites.

I have decided what I am going to do with math probably. This summer, I am going to self study geometry with a friend. I was thinking every 2-3 days, we could meet up and study through a lesson, then do some more work on that lesson the next day or two, and so on. After the summer, I would take Algebra II at Henry Sibley, since I am already getting bussed there for Spanish III. Then in my freshman year, I would take pre-calc, and after that, AP Calc AB & BC. Does that sound like a good plan?

You have a long ways to go to you get to college. Given your age, I think you need to relax a little bit and just have fun. What you need to do is take the most challenging curriculum available to you. If you focus too much on college at this stage of your career, you’re going to miss out on some great opportunities.

I see your point. I just really love to challenge myself, and take on a lot. I really want to do good in high school, and get the best education. I am just worried about ECs. I have been swimming for 7 years now, and probably a good 8,000 hours into it. I probably will do Math team, robotics, student council, and maybe debate. But except for that, I have no idea. I want to volunteer, but don’t know where to start. Any ideas?

“I am pretty set on majoring in math or computer science, like a 70% math, 30% computer science.”

No you aren’t. You haven’t even taken geometry yet and it’s hard to tell if you’ll end up liking college math or if your interests will change. Pursue your current interests, but make sure to leave your options option (colleges won’t judge you on how well your ECs fit with your intended major).

Alright, thanks.

GET OFF CC at your Age!

Unless ur a freaking genius

You have been warned

I’d just take the most challenging courses you can honestly. Not many people know exactly what they want to do or major in at 13…in fact not many 18 year olds know either so you are good.

OMG he is a baby! You are way too young to worrying about this and being so decided on this. I have met only one person who knew what they wanted to at 8 and have kept that dream still as a junior. Just go to hs and take the most challenging or best fit classes you can and use your electives wisely. Be flexible, your mind will change most likely. Explore, volunteer at places you will enjoy, and do things so you won’t regret your hs experience. It goes by so fast.

It’s great that you already realize how important high school is and college preparation, and want to do your best, but honestly, calm down a little. I’m sure everyone tells you you’re too young and you need to relax, and I’m sure you hate that, but its the truth. It’s just that even though you may have your heart set on math and computer science now, you might change your mind later (as improbable as that probably sounds right now). When/if that happens, you don’t want to go into full on freak out mode because you planned your whole life around getting into certain schools and doing a certain major, and now all of a sudden you’re not too sure it’s what you want anymore. And anyways, it’s too early in the game to do any sort of real planning. What really matters is what you do in high school with the options you have available to you. So no, it isn’t necessary to plan to take Calc as a freshman. If you REALLLY love math and want to do it, then go ahead and take advanced classes in middle school. But self studying? That’s pretty hard to do just so that you can start Calc as a freshman rather than a sophomore, which is completely unnecessary. I’m not trying to be patronizing or say you’re young and don’t know what you’re talking about, but really, all thus isn’t necessary, and you should really consider what you’re getting yourself into.

@AlexanderPM, ignore all the people that tell you to get off CC…they are completely ignorant

if you are interested in math, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you begin participating in competition math(go to artofproblemsolving.com and read about the American Math Comppetition –> AMC)

Yep I am ignorant

Actually dont get off CC. Just dont go on it extensevily until maybe your Sophmore year.
