I noticed that the deadline for housing is May 1… Can I apply for housing in several universities? I got into many and I do not know which one I want to attend yet. How does the housing application work? If I apply from now, do I have better chances for my top priority dorms? Also, how do I pick a roommate or is it randomly assigned?
Any info regarding housing would be appreciated.
(I got in USC, BU, Northeastern, UCSD… so if you have info specific to these universities please do share)
Generally speaking the earlier you apply for housing the better your chances of getting your preferred housing set-up (either specific dorm, specific room type, etc). However, I’d be surprised if you can pay a housing deposit if you haven’t yet paid an enrollment deposit for the school. You would need to check with each school to see whether they allow that. You’d also then need to check their refund policies to see if you can get your housing deposit back if you choose to enroll elsewhere. Roommate selection is also going to be school specific. All of these answers are likely going to be found on the schools’ websites.
Apply to UCSD’s as soon as possible, whether or not you plan to SIR there. This will grant you priority for your housing choice if you do eventually commit.
You can choose your roommates using the application they send out during the summer, usually early to mid-July.
Colleges start saying to apply for housing (now now now!!!) because they want to encourage you to put a deposit down to attend their school…and hopefully attend.
But really you should be choosing which college you want to attend and putting a deposit on that ONE school…although there maybe special cases (Like UCSD)…but if you put a deposit down and don’t attend you won’t get that money back.
