Help with housing preferences

Hi guys, I should be getting my contract soon. I called housing and they said since I applied early for housing (first week of January), I should get a contract. Now I need to realistically consider what might be open for me. I know San Jac is totally out of the question, but what is in my reach?

-I'm looking for an either all girls dorm, or a dorm with all girl floors.

I want at least a chance for private or connecting bath (but if not, thats ok)

Atmosphere really doesn't matter, as long as I can meet people and be studious at the same time.

A good location (preferably) but honestly doesn't matter.

I was initially considering Jester for its central location, dining facilities, and its social atmosphere since i'm a transfer student and would like to make friends, but then I found out that floors are co-ed and my parents don't like that, and nor do I.

Have you considered Kinsolving? It is an all girls dorm with its own cafeteria. There are some floors that have suites with a connecting bathroom. I lived there for two yers and enjoyed it.

I’d love to live there, my only concern is that its far. It will be my first year at UT (sophomore transfer) and I want to make sure i’m well connected to campus.

‘Far’ is a relative term when referring to the campus. It is really compact compared to most other universities. I lived in Kinsolving my freshman and sophomore years while most of my classes were in the Business school. It is about a five minute or less walk from Kinsolving. In fact, I don’t think it takes more than 10-15 minutes to go from one end of the campus to the other.

Thats not bad at all. My friend who lives in Jester was saying how i’d hate the “long walks” and she suggested Roberts, Prather, or Brackenridge.

Jester is NOT centrally located for UT. It’s located pretty far on the eastern edge of where students usually go. San Jac is very far to the east. Unless you are an art or law student, you won’t go east of San Jacinto Blvd except for football games.

The Drag is a big convenience, The Union is a good source of food and also has a lot of fun activities and meeting space, the FAC is a great place to study, and West Campus is the heart of student life at UT. For these reasons, Kinsolving is probably THE most centrally located dorm in the campus area.

The only way Jester is a better location is if you plan on spending your entire life at Jester, the library, and the gym–for your sake I hope you get out a little more than that.

Kinsolving? Really? That really is great to hear. Is it hard to get into, like San Jac? Or would there possibly be room this late in the game?

Kinsolving is not particularly difficult to get into, probably because it is an all women’s dorm. Since you applied in January, I think you can get in. It is really nice. The Drag is close. The honors dorms and Duren are right there, too. You’ve got the big cafeteria right in the building and you have the market there, too. (You can use your Dining Dollars to buy cartons of ice cream for the dorm room microfridge… At least that is what I would do…)

Freshmen walk back and forth to Jester for socializing; as a sophomore transfer, you may not have as great of a need to head over to Jester - although I am not sure about this - probably everyone does late night Wendy’s at Jester at least once in a while

I think there will be a higher proportion of sophomores in Kinsolving than in Jester.

The west campus dorms are not considered to be out-of-the-way.

MidwestMom, a lot of the students who are involved in the minority communities stay at Jester for all 4 years because it’s the center of minority life at UT.

Jester has a lot of freshmen, and the Wendy’s closes at 4, which is cool. But honestly I never once went to socialize at Jester–maybe that was because most of my friends were living at Towers. But a lot of people forget about the Union–Wendy’s is open til 2 at the Union. There is also a restaurant called Big Bite at 24th and Guadalupe that serves awesome late night food til 4, and Kerbey Lane never closes.

I’ve never gone to Jester to socialize either and I’m a minority and my best friend lives there. She always comes to Kins because it’s close to the drag/blockbuster/yogurt spot. It’s too far away from the drag and most of the more important buildings on campus - FAC, Union, Nat Science library (my fav library), Drag, Co-op. Also, walking back from Jester to the tower area is basically all uphill or stairs which is a pain on a bike - literally.

Jester’s food is kinda expensive in the cafeteria-ish place, imo in comparison. The one plus is you can take food to your room and you can’t really do that in Kinsolving unless you sneak it out or something. The only time I went into the Wendy’s at Jester was during orientation. I only use the one in the Union now. It is pretty close to Kinsolving, I’ve walked there to steal spoons from Wendy’s before when Kins was closed.

Kerby Lane is less than five minutes walk away. Best place ever. Also there’s Ming’s chinese restaurant, two Thai places, some sandwich place, Organic Burger something or another, Jack in the Box, and NY Slices and Ices right across the street.

Also, if you are worried about getting around the UT shuttle bus stop going east is across the street where littlefield is and the one going west is like a block or two east of that. And on guadalupe after the parking lot across from Kinsolving are the city bus stops going towards downtown and north.

I agree with midwest. Out of the way would be Riverside.

Thanks for the input guys. I’m definitely going to put Kinsolving down, but what about Littlefield? How does it compare to Kinsolving?

Littlefield is smaller than Kinsolving. I think a lot of the girls are in special programs like Women in Natural Sciences and programs like that, but there are other girls as well. It’s a little nerdier, or at least it was last year, but it’s not bad at all.

Littlefield is ONLY for freshman. Particularily Freshman girls who wanted to live in the Honors Quad of dorms but put Littlefiield as their 4th or 5th choice for housing.
Also I’ve been to Jester to socialize/eat/everything else even though I live on the other side of campus. Particularily to wait for a bit while a friend gets their car from the Brazos garage.
Honestly UT campus is not that big. Location is not a huge issue if you’re living on campus.

The room I saw in Littlefield was tiny.

I think what i’ll do is put Kinsolving as my first choice and Littlefield as my second. Not sure about the others!
