Gpa could be better, act and APs are good but did you pass them? Vanderbilt is a definite reach

you have an excellent high school record. even so, with just under 30 thousand applicants (up from the 11 thousand that applied when my 28 year old applied)…Vanderbilt is a reach for all students. make sure that you can afford to pay for all your short listed private schools by sitting down with your parents and doing a preliminary EFC. make sure to apply to private schools-- if you will receive financial aid…that don’t require loans. Vanderbilt is on the short list of all grant for financial aid colleges. Vanderbilt is need blind on admissions as well so they don’t try to stagger their class based on balancing out private pay with financial need. In other words, always have a great financial safety college in your pocket that you would be proud to attend. many top scoring students do choose their state flagship honors colleges and do go on to wonderful graduate schools. In your case, essay quality and quality of references will be important. Buy Harry Bauld’s little anniversary edition book on college essays and don’t turn in your application till you know you did your best on essays.
