Hi guys,
I just got my financial aid package for an in-state school that costs $26,000. They gave me $13,000 of institutional grants which is awesome, but how come I didn't receive any federal aid. My fafsa report said that I qualify for a couple hundred dollars from the pell grant. Since I have to pay the other half of the cost, can i use federal grants to help with that? Also, on the fafsa I said that I will live on-campus, but I just learned that my school won't have room for me on-campus. Will this change my financial aid eligibility? Thanks for your help!

Pick up the phone and call them. Sometimes there is one letter that announces the grant aid, and a separate one that details the federal aid you qualify for.

One of my clients just found out that “Institutional Grants” is a different form of Merit Aid- If you have a sibling in college the same time you are in and that sibling graduates your parents EFC goes up and the institutional grant is pulled. Did you college explain this? With merit aid this cannot happen unless you fall below a certain GPA? Thanks for your help!

Re: grants…check with each college. Some grants are a combination of need/merit. YMMV.
