My son is interested in going to a northeast school ( we are in Virginia; he is not interested in a VA school despite the great options here ). Currently has a weighted 4.0 go and probably a 3.7 year gpa . He eventually wants to go into the fbi and is thinking about majoring in psychology . He also wants a college with a good athletic program, specifically football as he wants that type of college experience . He is taking act and sat in next 2 months . My guess is he will score in 1200 range for sat . His junior classes are :
Ap English , Apush, Ap calc ( AB), Ap physics , engineering drawing and criminal justice . Next year will possibly be dual enrollment English, Ap government , Ap statistics , science tbd, Ap psychology and criminal justice .
So far on the list is
Syracuse
Upitt
Unh
He wants to be in a city or close to acity( at least unh is not too far from Portsmouth ). Would love other suggestions . Thank you !
He will not find great football in New England. BC is the biggest program, and well lets just say they aren’t winning a national championship anytime soon.
Some good hockey programs around here, and some decent basketball programs. Maybe URI, PC, Umass, UNH, UVM with his stats.
Good luck.
UMass Lowell has a good criminal justice program. It is another northeast school with a good hockey team but I am not sure whether it even has football.
Thanks @RightCoaster . That’s what I’ve heard about New England schools …-BC is way too much of a reach and I guess I need to bet a feel if a school without a football program but other sports options is ok. I heard UNh football has support from students . And he’s not just looking in New England , anywhere in the northeast works . . Thanks again for recommendations .
You have a good start on schools. What about Miami of Ohio (Ben Roethlisberger’s alma mater)? It’s not Northeast, I know, but quality school, has big-time sports, beautiful campus. Here’s this year’s chart on merit money. He would potentially receive some if he got at least a 1280 on SAT. (And he might take the ACT once, some do better on one, some on the other.)
Maybe also the Universities of Delaware and Connecticut. Both are also quality schools and have more or less classic collegiate campuses and full D-1 sports programs.
We loved the University of Vermont. Burlington is one of the greatest college towns (in my opinion). It’s right on Lake Champlain with the Adirondacks visible across, and mountains surrounding.
Thanks @DadTwoGirls . His dad is actually a graduate of umass Lowell . What I heard is that the fbi does not want criminal justice majors ( they would rather have a stem or accounting major ) , that’s why he is thinking of psychology. It is an option though , even though they don’t have football. Thanks .
@TTG . Thanks . I’ve heard great things about Miami university in Ohio . Not sure if I can sell him in the Midwest and even though I hear it’s a beautiful campus , I hear it’s pretty rural , and I’m not sure he wants that . UDelaware is a good option. That is not too far, so we should probably visit . Do they have football ? Loved UVM. Went up last year with other son who is a senior . They don’t have football , though , so they , but they have other sports . And u conn is another good option ( though not near a city I think ). It may be a reach for him. I’m hoping for some high scores !!
@preppedparent . Thank you . Good options . Northeastern would be a real reach . I went there years ago for grad school , and it was not a highly selective school then , now average sat scores is like 1400. Crazy ! Thanks again !
Note that many of the football programs in the Northeast, including UNH, don’t play at the highest level, which is DI-FBS. Instead, they play at the lower DI-FCS level. Lots of people (including me) enjoy FCS football, but it definitely doesn’t attract anywhere near the kind of media attention or fan interest that FBS football does. If your son wants a “big-time” college football experience, then he may be disappointed at an FCS school like UNH.
If your son wants “major league” (FBS) college football, then the options in the Northeast are:
MA: BC, UMass
CT: UConn
NY: Syracuse, UBuffalo, Army
PA: Penn State, Pitt, Temple
NJ: Rutgers
MD: Maryland, Navy
Many of these schools, while they do play FBS football, are not generally very good at it.
UMass and UConn not near a city. What about some of the SUNYs: Albany, Buffalo, Binghamton. RIT? PA schools to consider: Temple, Drexel, Muhlenberg, Duquesne, UPitt.
Maybe check out Pitt. They have decent sports there, all kinds of majors, the city is decent now, and I think his scores/gpa will work there.
As mentioned above, Syracuse is decent for sports and all sorts of majors too, just not a city nearby.
@taverngirl . Thanks for your response . Yes, umass ans uconn might be tough sells because of location . Was thinking about Drexel ( no football I believe ), could look at Temple as well. U pitt is on the list . Duquesne is a thought( not sure If a religiousnschool would be an issue ). What town is Muhlenbertg in ? Does it have a decent athletics program ? The SUNY schools are a thought , too . My husband didn’t think amy had football . Will have to check out more closely : thanks again !
@Corbett . Thanks for your response . I think he wants a school where students attend the games , don’t think they have to be at the highest level . Those are all schools to look at . Syracuse and Upitt are already on the list so that adds a few more . Thanks !
While not in a city, WVU has the big sports experience and has programmming that feeds into the FBI from what I’ve been told. His stats would get him likely merit $$ there as well.
@RightCoaster . Thanks . I was looking at admitted students scores at upitt, and they seem a bit higher than his. His gpa won’t chanfe too much , but maybe he can pull his scores up a bit . Hope so . I’ve heard great things about pitt . I think it would be a great match if he can get in .
@Dustyfeathers . Thanks for your feedback . Definitely need to look at muhlenberg . I know it’s a smaller college so that could be an issue . Love the idea of Lehigh and Lafayette , just think they’d be huge reaches for him , as well as Villanova . Good to know about SUNY schools . Will have to find out more about them. Thanks !!
Thanks @Proudmama2 . That’s a thought . I think he really wants east coast as we mentioned Wisconsin and Michigan state, and he seemed hesitant , but it’s worth mentioning and considering . Do you know anything about the programming it has that feeds into the fbi ???
