My orientation’s gonna be during 8/10/11 to 8/13/11, for the College of Engineering. I have no idea how to pick classes. At all. Do those of you who already went to orientation (e.g. people in L&S) or older students have any tips for me? Like how should I prepare for what classes I should pick before orientation? How hard is it to get the classes you want? Or should I not plan and just go with the flow, or whatever. Thanks!

Also should I see what AP credit I get for my AP exams?

I’m from College of Bio/Sci and just had my orientation. Basically, they gave you a giant book with all courses that are offered and their description, a book with course times, and a freshman student handbook. Your orientation leader will give you advice and you will have about 45 minutes - 1 hour in total to discuss your plan. To pick classes, they advise you to choose some of the prerequisites for your class (since your in CoE, I would assume they want you to take math or chem/physics), and the rest are general education classes or fun classes. My advice is to take 13-14 units so as not to overwhelm yourself the first quarter. Some classes tend to be harder to get into than others. The guides will tell you the class size, but apparently if there are enough people then they will open up a new class or expand the class size. When I picked classes, they practically assured me that I will get Chem 2a and I ended up not getting it…so now I have to waitlist the class.

For AP credits, your orientation leader should already have the information and they will go over that stuff in your first meeting on the first day. So, definitely check your AP credit because they do actually end up mattering.

Hopefully this helps!

they have orientation leaders for this
all i advise you to do is know what classes you should have to be on track, especially since engineering is very unit heavy

Just as a clarification: If I get AP credit for a class, that means I get the units I need towards graduation and I don’t have to take that class. Right?

Ask your orientation leader about this. They are required to know these sorts of things. I say this only because I think the rules regarding AP credit have become more stringent since I started.

It depends. Some APs will give you credit towards your degree (the number of units is based on score) and will let you repeat the equivalent UCD course for credit. For example, if you scored a 5 on AP Chem, you would get something like 8 units (I forget) and while it is equivalent to CHE2A, you could still take the class for credit.

There are some APs, however, that will give credit towards your degree but will not let you repeat the course for credit. For example, a 5 on AP English L&C is equivalent to ENL3 or UWP1. But with those units, you can’t take ENL3/UWP1 for credit. Something bad happens - your orientation leader will explain everything. And don’t be afraid to ask them questions!

Thank you to all for your help! I appreciate it
Also, this is completely unrelated, but during orientation, do you have to bring your own toilet paper and towel? Just wondering LOL

The things here: [UC Davis Orientation - Freshmen Student Items To Bring](http://orientation.ucdavis.edu/freshmen/itemstobringfreshmen.asp) are all you’ll need. Don’t bring your laptop if your only reason for bringing it is to register it, though–that can easily be done from home at https://computingaccounts.ucdavis.edu/cgi-bin/services/index.cgi

So, no, you don’t need to bring towels or toilet paper.
