I'm applying to several different colleges and about half use the Common Application, the other half don't. Does my teacher have to hand-write/fill out nearly 10 different recommendations, then? I'm confused because I know that colleges require you to send it in paper with its specific letter-head, so that would mean nearly 10 different copies? (Although I know that I can use the same recommendation, but different enclosure)

It depends on the college AND the teacher. First, figure out what each college requires. Once you have this information, let the teacher know. Perhaps you need ten copies. She/He might be comfortable enough with having you make your own copies. Others might prefer giving it directly to the college. Or perhaps to the college counseling office who can make copies for you. Or, you can even tell them that seeing as you need X amount of copies, it would be best for the rec. to be written on the computer; have her/him print out ten (on letter-head paper if need be) and as a courtesy, provide stamped envelopes that you will personally send out for them.

Inform the teacher of the particular situation and figure it out from there. Give her/him the options and gauge which one they feel most comfortable with. (Talk to College Counseling about this beforehand. They tend to have a system of sorts and teachers who have written recs. before may know about it as well) Teachers are usually willing to tell you which option best suits them. Good Luck!
