Hello College Confidential!
I am trying to prepare for college auditions next year and I am looking for some pieces that will show my versatility.
I am a very high soprano (I can sing classical and have been asked about majoring in VP but MT is my love) and can sing about up to a high E6 (I have sung Glitter and Be Gay and all that kinds of songs)
I am looking for a piece that is APPROPRIATE for college auditions (probably not from an operetta) that will show off that very high side of my range. Anyone know of any songs that go higher than a G?
To contrast a soprano piece, I would also like to find a belt song. I can belt probably to a C or D comfortably, but I would probably like to be safe with a C.
They need to be contrasting in tempos as well (one up-tempo and one ballad)
I NEED HELP FROM MY FELLOW MT GENIUSES AND SUPER FANS OUT THERE!!!
Do you study with a voice teacher or have someone who can help you? It is very difficult to recommend songs for you when we really don’t know much about you. Do you have any audition songs in your book you’ve used in the past that have been successful for you?
Your best bet is start with the people who know you best and have worked with you in theater or choir (I’m assuming you are a choir kid, but maybe not). Then do some research. What actresses (stage or screen) do people say you remind them of? Take that and go look in IMDB. Have these ladies done stage work? What roles have they played? Look at contemporary MT as well as Golden Age material. Golden Age musicals are chock full of great roles for sopranos. Listen to Camelot, State Fair, Peter Pan (Bernstein), etc.
The important thing is to find songs that fit YOU, that you love and that show the auditors your best YOU.
You might consider working with someone that can support you and provide good feedback during this process. There are lots of folks mentioned here in CC. Good luck!
Any of the coaching networks could pair you with a song/repertoire coach who could help you select the perfect repertoire for your voice and type. Just FYI if that’s in your budget.
