I'm an undeclared (social science) major planning to get into business economics and communication studies (yes, double majoringggg...), what classes should I take my first year to ensure my entrance into at least one of the two majors? THANKS FOOS! HOLLA! :)

All the pre-reqs for both of those majors. Both of those are pretty selective and require you to do well in their pre-req "weeder" courses.

nothing will ensure that you get in. also the common misconception [at least for comm, dont know anything about biz econ] is that you need to take ALL the pre-reqs when u apply, which is untrue. if you go to a comm major meeting they will tell you not to do this because then it appears that you have no backup major or other plans if you dont get in. rather, they prefer about 2-4 prereqs with a variety of other courses. but both majors require high gpas..nothing will give u the shoo-in!!!

High, high grades in whatever you end up taking. Like, seriously, HIGH grades.

It's all about the GPA (for comm).

which one is relatively easier to get into? bizecon or comm. studies?

I am not sure, but in my opinion, both would be equally hard. most bizecon majors have a 3.3+ GPA in econ weeder classes and most comm studies majors need 3.8+ GPA in comm weeder classes. Econ seems to be a more difficult subject, which explains the lower GPA. However, both have a GPA cutoff. I am curious though as to why you want to double in bizecon and comm studies, to me that seems like suicide because they are the two toughest L/S majors.

take the pre-reqs and balance them out with GE's

Jimmy2588... the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph :)

Cathy, you are one crazy girl :P

haha cathy. i hope you have fun trying to get into those majors haha. i believe in you though! i say, go bio! haha.

Hey Alyssa, and Lillian? HEY FOOS, HOLLA! RIDE THE YELLOW BUS, GET HYPHY!!!

I totally disagree with comm being one of the hardest LS majors.

To get in? TOTALLY.

But once you're in? NO. NO NO NO.

All of my English/Soc/History/Bus Econ/Etc friends HATE me because my classes are a joke in comparison. It's not so much UCLA's fault that comm is easy-ish, it's just the nature of the subject. Also, professors are generally very, very generous in comm. Lots of scantron tests, lots of special curves, TONS of extra credit.

Although, lower div comm is MUCH more difficult than upper div since a lot of them are weeder courses. Upper div might just seem easier in comparison.

Anyways, it's hard to say which is easier to get into. I'd say bus econ but that's only because it's a larger department and they accept more people. I have a friend who got into both as an incoming sophomore, but she is a- insanely smart, and b- insanely active on campus. It's totally possible, but very, very rare. Could do it if you stay really focused.
