Hi! I’m posting this in hope that I will receive some advice on what to do with my senior year schedule. I am planning on applying to Columbia ED, but now I’m not so sure if my chances will decrease.
I am planning on going into the sciences, so of course I signed up for AP Environmental science after completely the other AP science classes that are offered. The issue that I have is that I am also signed up for Calculus Honors but it is only offered one time during the school year during the same block as APES. This means that the only math class I can sign up for is Calculus CP or Problem Stats CP. I have never taken a CP class and I am positive it is not what Columbia is looking for.
I am taking classes at my local community college during the school year as well and I was wondering if taking Calculus there (because that is where I placed) would be better than taking CP Calculus at my high school. I would also be able to take an extra science course if I wanted to.
Would it be bad if I had three years of math at my high school and one to two math classes at a community college?
No, it is fine.
Having said that, you don’t need to take APES just because it’s an AP. If you’re interested in the subject, fine, then go ahead and take it. However, it will make no difference in the admissions decisions if you take Calculus Honors at your HS and replace APES with a fun elective. Just because a school offers a bunch of AP’s does not mean a college expects an applicant to take them all.
@skieurope Thanks for replying!! I am taking APES because I am extremely interested in it. I like taking as many science classes as I can because that’s what I’m interested in. I am not a huge fan of math because I find it quite difficult, but I still do just fine in it. I am just trying to take four years of math because I think it would be bad to skip an entire year of math. I was just wondering if it is okay to take a class at a community college instead of at a high school. I’m not very interested in Calculus, but I think it is a class that I would benefit from if I took it in high school.
OK, then it’s fine. Best of luck.
Yes, calculus 1 at the community college would count as one HS year of math, so you could even take a science class at the cc the following semester…
