Help with schools with a good English program

I think I would go back to Univ of Redlands and drop Ithaca College. If you want to be a teacher in CA, Redlands is a better choice. I also liked your list when you had Sonoma State on there - a good choice for English and for teaching and a good option financially. Mizzou is a good choice for English out-of-state (might even be a match rather than a safety), but I’ve also heard University of Oregon is good for teaching. Personally, I think the UCSC campus is more beautiful and exciting than UCI. UCI looks like an office park. UCSC has the advantage of redwood forests and the beach. But, you might feel differently. UCI is more manicured.

I’m not sure where I want to teach in the future, actually. I’m looking mainly around the CA area because my parents want most of my choices near the west coast. The reason University of Missouri: Columbia is there is because my dad suggested it. Both he and my older sister graduated form there and it has a good English program, and I’d get the legacy bonus.

Well, if money is any kind of an issue, in-state is better. I have to fly my son to Pittsburgh every year and it isn’t cheap. You could, theoretically, drive to Missouri, but Ithaca will be an expensive trip twice a year. One other consideration money-wise is the cost of housing. If housing is cheap that can balance the cost of getting to and from school. The worst would be to go somewhere with expensive housing and difficult travel arrangements.

That’s not to say that tuition doesn’t trump all other costs.

You do know that Mizzou doesn’t consider legacy, right? http://ir.missouri.edu/data-set/CDS%200809.pdf</a> Section C7. Most public U’s don’t care.

To ricegal - UCSC might look nicer than UC Irvine - but Irvine has one of the best creative writing programs in the country. Sometimes one just has to ignore the buildings and go for what’s inside them!

Do any of you know if University of Missouri: Columbia requires an essay? I can’t seem to find one in the application.
