First time posting but I'm hoping I might get some information from everyone about my son getting into UCF. After a devastating issue with my teenage daughter, we sold our family home in WA state and moved to North Dakota. My son opted to move to Florida to be near his girlfriend and enroll in college. His girlfriend was attending UCF so obviously that was where my son wanted to be. His first app to UCF was denied so he opted to buckle down and go to Valencia and re-apply to UCF later. At the time, my husband and I both had very successful high paying jobs and it wasn't an issue. Fast forward 2 years later. I now have 3 kids in college (2 out of state but one has an out of state tuition waiver) and still one young son at home. I no longer have my high paying job (due to some health issues), matter of fact we aren't anywhere close to where our income was and things are getting difficult. We used to earn 85k a year and now are down to around 30k. and Valencia does not have an "out of state tuition waiver". Several applications to UCF and he's now gotten an approval pending 60 credits and 2 years of a foreign language. He has 45 credits so far and has one class of Spanish left to take. He had enrolled in all of them next semester and planned on getting into UCF in the Spring. Hallelujah. However, Valencia has now decided to not allow financial aid on 2 of his classes he needs stating he doesn't need them for his degree (but UCF wants him to have them) I just cannot afford to foot the bill for this and pay everything else. YET, if he doesn't take them, he will have to wait to get into UCF in the fall. BUT, this just cannot happen on our income. He would have to drop out and come home. I just can't afford to pay another semester and neither can he. Any advice on how to handle this or approach things would help.

Has your son tried talking to whatever department and explaining that UCF requires these classes for his degree? He can even bring in the degree program from the undergrad catalog and show them if he has to.

Assuming that doesn’t work, are there any other classes your son can take that they will give him financial aid for (and hopefully relevant classes)? He can opt to do that and can take the other classes when he gets to UCF.

That’s gotta suck… I agree with TheTicks. Try bringing in UCF’s undergraduate catalog for the major he’s intending to go into and talk to Valencia’s financial aid department about it.

If it really comes down to it… 2 classes at Valencia (6 credits) averages out to about $700… maybe take a loan? Does your son work? Out of curiosity, what degree is he going for at UCF? And what are the two classes that Valencia refuses to pay for?
