Help with STUDENT loans

Okay, we have made an agreement with D that she can choose the school of her dreams IF she pays the "extra" cost of attending. In other words, we are willing to pay (take out loans) up to the amount of the college that she would have to pay the least amount for (of those that she has applied). For example, right now, she could go to a really good school that she obviously liked (she applied didn't she?) for $15,000/year (tuition is around 40,000). SO, if she decides to go to another school that would cost, say, $22,000/year we would expect her to pay the remaining $7,000. She is fine with this. My question is: what kind of loans would she be able to take out on her own? Would they be deferred until she graduates? She can only get the unsubsidized Stafford loan for the $2625 that I know of.. does anyone know of any others? Do they require co-signers?

Hey lsandin!

Read everything you can on the PLUS loans, which, if eligible, you can borrow up to whatever your finances or the Stafford loans don't cover. Not sure about the co-signing deal, altho I'd be willing to co-sign to get a better rate.

Well, only one more day until D's last decision, from a certain Eastern school, then we go into the family think tank!

jnm: I wish you and your family the best of luck in making the BIG DECISION : )
We are actually waiting for THREE more schools (one tommorrow) and two (hopefully) on Thursday. The dream school comes tommorrow for my D as well (wonder where that may be??) very nervous, LOL! (However, MOM's dream school comes on Thursday, so we will see!). Then, of course its more waiting until financial aid packages come. Got a nice grant from Rice. She is going to visit for Owl Weekend on April 14 so we will see. Still much up in the air here. Kind of exciting in a weird, nervous kind of way...
