Hello, I'm writing my supplement for University of Michigan and I'm confused on the prompt.

Essay #1 (Required for all applicants. Approximately 250 words) Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.

Would it be okay for me to write about a community that my band members and I have come to form ever since we started playing together? I consider this a community because we share common goals, interests, and ideology. Should I discard this idea and write about more traditional forms of community based on ethnic heritage or family traditions? What do you think? Feedbacks are welcome!

A community is literally anything you’re involved in. Don’t overthink it. Any group of people you are apart of works.

All right thank you!

A community can be any groups with at least a few members in it. Any clubs, team, fellowship group or even your class should be fine as long as you have something to write about it. Remember the idea of the essay is to let the adcom know more about you. It is often a good idea to tie it to something related to your talent, your passion, your goal, etc. You are not just answering a question, but you want to use it to strengthen your application.

a community can be anything really, i talked about my hockey team in my essay. ill read what you got if you want pm it.

Only you can define your community, and I think that being a member of the band is certainly part of a community. If this was a marching band and you are serious about continuing this activity and try out for the UM marching band, now you’ve not only defined your community, but you’ve shown what you plan to bring to campus. Don’t overthink the question that much, though.
