Hi y'all, is anyone familiar with any good schools in Texas, around the San Antonio area, that have a good psychology program? I was thinking of transferring to UTSA (i'm currently in a community college in a dead end town called Laredo), since my extra curricular activity isn't that pretty, hell, it's practically non-existent. But I want to hear what you all have to say about St. Mary's, or any school in San Antonio, TX for that matter.

Oh, and does it matter whether I get a B.A. or B.S. in Psych? Considering that I plan to get a doctorate.

Thanks/Gracias/Danke/Merci.

How did you miss Trinity University in San Antonio? It's a terrific school with a very strong psychology program. Excellent academics and good smaller size (about 2300 students). They do a very good job of getting their students into graduate programs. Beautiful campus minutes from downtown. It's in all the college guides. www.trinity.edu

Trinity is a great school. Many of our top students go there, and they love it. It's great for liberal arts studies, including psychology.

I know it's a great school...

The reason I overlooked Trinity is that I doubt I have any chance of getting in there with my lack of community service/extra-curricular activity. I have a 3.6 GPA right now in college, but my high-school gpa was a 2.4 and my awful SAT score was 1000. So yeah, there you have it, a pretty longshot if you ask me.

...and about BA/BS in Psychology, all I see being offered through most undergraduate programs in Texas is a BA in Psychology. Is this correct?

And please drop your 2 cents on me regarding the importance of either degree.

Thanks.

Does it have to be in San Antonio? I can't address psychology specifically but here are some other possibilities:

Our Lady of the Lake -San Antonio
St. Mary's -San Antonio (I see you were already asking about that one as well as UTSA)
Texas A & M Corpus Christi
Texas State - San Marcos
University of the Incarnate Word -San antonio
Saint Edward's -Austin
Concordia University -Austin

All of these are in the U.S. News 2005 edition of America's Best Colleges and it looks like your SAT score is in the middle range for all of them. I left out a few in which your SAT falls below the 25%/75% range. Hope this helps and good luck.

You may want to consider Southwestern University. I think that it would be a realistic reach for a transfer student with your credentials. Not in San Antonio, but only a couple of hours away. Southwestern is not as selective as Trinity, but still has a very good reputation.

I think that your SAT score should have less of an impact as a transfer student and that your college gpa will have greater weight -- which is good in your case.
