I was just wondering if there was anyway to let the colleges that I am applying to know that during my sophomore year I had a concussion. My grades slipped and so did my gpa during that time. I just don't want colleges to think I was lazy, when in reality I couldn't stay full days at school or go to school. Before my concussion I had a 3.5 gpa now I have around a 3. My junior year pulled my gpa very little with straight a's. I was wondering if my counselor would have to say something or if there was anywhere on the common app that I could include this.

If there is an essay portion, include it there. You’ll also probably need an explanation of why you were missing school from the doctor that managed the situation, simply because a concussion wouldn’t drop your grades that much under normal circumstances. I would assume that in your case it was a very severe concussion that lasted a very long time- I was concussed for 4 weeks freshman year and maintained my GPA with a little help from my teachers and our school’s athletic trainer. As long as you have a thorough explanation including info about the lack of understanding from your teachers (or whatever was the main contribution to your GPA dropping) and a medical professional vouching for you, you should be fine in my opinion.

I hope I helped!

Ideally, your counselor should explain it. You can also provide an explanation under the “is there anything else we should know about you” question if you don’t feel like writing about it in an essay.
