Help with tuition

I plan to attend NYU in my future. I understand tuition is pretty high at this school, but that's not a problem for me. I need assistance in calculating how much I will need to pay for a four year undergraduate study.

Now, I want to double major in philosophy and film, so consequently I will be going to The College of Arts and Sciences and Tisch School of the Arts.

I have not the slightest clue on tuition in either of these schools, NYU's website is horrible.

Can anyone offer me any advice on how I can calculate this?

Or can someone simply do it for me?

Also, for the Liberal Studies Program lets assume they referred me and I chose to go into this program. Will this add on to the tuition?

What about paying for dorms?

Sorry I have so many questions.

Sounds like you have some research to do. A web forum is not the place to have people do the research for you and calculate YOUR tuition. The NYU website explains in detail tuition for each college and additional expenses (housing, food, travel, ect). Get on the website and figure it out  If your a future NYU kid you will find what your looking for.

I agree it’s a good idea to research the specifics on the NYU website because you don’t how accurate people’s answers are here. Including myself, so take what I say here as a rough estimate. I am in CAS and this is completely off the top of my head.

Generally tuition is about 50k a year which allots space to take 18 credits a semester without having to pay more per credit (which is about a $1000 an extra credit, but it’s not suggested because students generally can’t handle more than 18 credits a semester). Housing ranges from 10-11k a year to 15k. Obviously this depends on if you choose low cost housing vs. normal vs. a single. Each dorm is slightly different.

Book REALLY vary but I would say downwards of a couple hundred a semester to upwards of $1000. textbooks are usually $200 while little books (like The Iliad or Antigone) you can get for $2-$3. Also classes that have a I and II (like Chem, Bio, Orgo) will use the same text book all year so you have to buy an expensive textbook but it lasts over two semesters. This range is very flexible given you have friends you can borrow books from or get deals online or rent books (definitely an option) or you resell after your done. Even checking out books from the library works sometimes.

LSP should be about the same but from what I understand there is no financial aid offered.

And then additionally an extra amount of money for the cost of living which includes a meal plan (or not). Meal plans I think range from $1000ish to $2000 (not as sure but can look online) depending on how many meals you want (per week or per semester). Freshmen are required to have a meal plan. And then just being in the city which is always more expensive that people expect (especially first year). Obviously it depends on the person but at least around $100 a month just for random activities and other costs.

jorge,

This was what I figured (from a previous post and after some research) for my son’s expenses for CAS tuition, fees, books, housing, meals, and spending money (which I have decided will be $150/ month or approx.
$4800-5000 for my son for the 8 month academic year):

The following is an estimate and may not include miscellaneous expenses, depending on your spending style and choices for housing and meal plan.

CAS 2010-2011 Tuition, Housing, Meal Plan and Other Fees:

Tuition and Registration Fees: approximately $40,132
Housing: approx. $6700 (LCT or Low Cost Triple) to $15,600 (depending on dorm and type of room)
Meal Plan: approx. $2000 to $4000 (depending on # of meals in your meal plan)
Books: approx. $1000+ (depending on courses and where you purchase books)
Pocket $ and $ for off-campus Dining (to cover meals not eaten in NYU Dining Halls): Depends on your spending/life- style.

I figured a total of $62,000 for academic year 2010-2011 with pocket money, book fees, and $12,000 for double room and $4000 (approx) for the 175 flex meal plan, in addition to tuition and reg fees for my son.

By the way, if you live in a traditional style dorm, you must take the 10 meal/ week or 175 flex meal/ semester plan at minimum. The cost is $3730 for 2010-2011, so the Meal Plan cost should be closer to $4000 for the year (instead of the $2000 mentioned above).

I have my son’s ESTIMATED expenses for 2010-2011, based on:
$40,000 for tuition and reg fees,
$12,000 for housing,
$4,000 for 175 flex meal plan,
$1000 for books
and $5000 pocket money and food purchased outside of dining halls. (I had determined $600/ month spending money for sonny who will have to eat 2 days of meals and breakfast meals on his own based on his meal plan; approx. 8 months to the academic year means $4800-5000 pocket money).
So the total is $62,000.

Also, figure in 3-6% increase in total cost for inflation each year.
