Help with UF Application. PLEASE

Hey guys. I have a few questions about the resume section of the UF Application.

1) For the section with the 950 word limit which is asking " to list any program you have been part of in preparation for college"-I really dont understand what programs they are talking about. they list examples such as 4-H but does anyone know what else I could put under there or what you listed because I really don't want to leave a section blank.

2) For the 950 word sections under "Family Obligation" How much do you recommend writing. What I mean is for the box asking "Do you have to work to supplement you family income?" should i answer with a simple " No I do not have to work to supplement my family income."? or should i expand on it and state why or why not and that I currently have a job as part of my own responsibility but not necessarily to supplement my family income?

I remember having very similar questions myself last year, ac3m4n. Here’s some help:

1) For the college preparation thing, they want to know if you’ve done something like a summer band camp at a university or some type of university leadership thing. Don’t worry about not having anything to put in there; I didn’t either! I believe what I entered was something along the lines of, “I have not participated in any college preparation programs.”

2) Same deal here. I don’t know/remember exactly what the application is asking for, but I do remember it asking about working to support my family and I wrote, “No, I do not work to supplement my family income.” If that’s all it asks, that type of statement should suffice. There’s no need to mention how the job teaches you responsibility and earns you some extra cash because I’m sure the people reviewing your application will be aware of this when they see you have a job, lol.

Good luck!

^this. just tell the truth. they wont penalize you for not being poor, and not everyone gets to attend leadership/college level summer programs. for question #1, however, if you recall being invited to participate in them, it wouldn’t be a stretch to explain why you didn’t attend. just dont get carried away.

1) Advanced Placement program? IB?

I just simply put “No” for those questions.

Thank You all very much for the help.

The AP and IB programs aren’t what they’re looking for in that section. Again, they’ll see if you’ve taken these courses on your transcript so there’s no need to explain how the rigor has prepared you for college.

For the higher education question, does attending a journalism workshop count? And can I put that I was invited to the National Youth Leader thing but couldn’t attend?

^I’m pretty sure almost everyone with a certain test score/GPA gets invited to those conventions. I don’t think it’s as prestigious as they make it sound and doubt it’s worth mentioning at all.

Yeah I didn’t think it was anything too special, I just didn’t really know.

Another question:
Do many people write in the box for additional information? I was thinking I could write about some of the other activities I have done in high school that don’t fit into other boxes?

For the other information box, I wrote about things that didn’t fit in to any of the other categories. I wrote about ways my time was spent. Like how I spend x amount of hours at my church each week, playing recreational sports, and how I didn’t technically have a job, but I kept score at a baseball field.
