Help with what school to apply to.

Hello!

I am a Swedish guy in search for a really good university/college in USA in which I will be able to study the upcoming years. I will most likely rely on a soccer scholarship so a decent soocer team is required (at least mid div.2) in order for me to apply. I have already got some suggestions from different schools such as New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and they sure look interesting but the problem is that none of these schools fulfills my requirements.

NYIT has a good soccer team but their main focus academically lies within science and technology and what I am interested in majoring in is Business/economics/finance or something along those lines. What I am asking for are some tips on high quality schools which has a solid academic business department as well as a decent soccer team. I am working with a swedish company who helps people with contacting schools in USA and they will surely help me contact whatever school I might chose.

So to make a sort of list on requirements of what Im looking for:

At least div.2 soccer team

Located in or near a large city on the west coast or the east coast. (New York is one of the cities Im interested in or similar cities)

Good academically (probably most important. Will not go to America just for the fun of it)

With that said. I am not a super student with top notch grades with which I will be able to apply to Harvard, Stanford or any of those Ivy League schools but my grades are certainly good enough for a high quality univerity. My grades here in Sweden are about 18/20, which is about half classes best possible grade and other half next best grade. I have also done both SAT and TOEFL. Scored 102 on TOEFL and about 1000 on math and critical reading added on SAT. I have two recommendation letters from my soccer coaches and one from my teacher in Physics (who have worked at Berkeley in California) as well as I have written a personal letter of why I want to attend their school.

I think that this should be able to give me a quite good chance on getting in to a high quality university and still get a scholarship due to my soccer performance ( I play in second best division in Sweden). The problem is only, WHAT school should I apply to. I just can't find anything among all those thousands of schools so all help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Boston College and Boston University are two good schools in cities with D1 soccer. Duke, Northeastern, UCLA, UNC, USC, Wake Forest... it all depends on your academics and soccer abilities. Try the advanced search on College Board:
<a href="http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/adv_typeofschool.jsp%5B/url%5D">http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/adv_typeofschool.jsp</a>
You can enter everything you're looking for - from either D1 or D2 soccer to the location of the school.

Get in touch with the Northeastern coach. They continue to focus on broadening their student base, and your numbers should make the cut for them. It's in Boston, which is a great college city. Northeastern is a 5 year program because of the internships, but that allows you to earn money during the year.
Contact the coach directly, and have a brief summary of soccer accomplishments and academic accomplishments. In order to secure any financial aid and particularly to be part of the coach's plan for the following year, you need to work through the coach.
If you like Philadelphia, contact Temple. Their soccer team is getting better, and Temple has the majors you want. You need to reach out to the coaches and be persistent. Contact both the head coach and the assistant coach, but don't send a tape until you have spoken with them. Good luck!

ok, thanks for the replies :D Northeastern certainly looks like a really nice school and I will try to contact the coach.

The fact that you can give me some advice on what I should look at is really important for me since I do not really know what my degrees/scores/qualifications are enough for in USA.

However, I have an additional question regarding NYIT. The head coach replied on my mail and said that NYIT has a really good academic department and that I will not be disappointed if I decide to go there and that the business major is really good. That made me question myself. Did he just say that because he wants me to be interested or is it true? Some comments on NYIT would be appreciated as well.

thanks again for the replies.

NYIT is nothing special, and their athletic department is nothing special.

Temple definitely sounds like a great choice for you: Top notch business and located right near center city Philadelphia. Soccer team is very solid. Our best player was a 2nd team All American. We have an international roster, with players from Germany, France, the Bahamas, Nigeria, Senegal, and others from other places in previous years.

Here is the head coach's email address: coachmac(at)temple(dot)edu

temple's business program looks pretty decent. However, I have read several posts about Temple being a dangerous place (or rather the surrounding areas) to stay during the nights. I am not sure I am up to such life.

Are there any other good schools I can look up in places like Florida, California or similar areas?

hey personally i hate the NORTH... look into University of Georgia, University of Florida, New college of Florida, College of Charleston, Maybe Duke...

also, id assume its easier to get into USA colleges from otehr countries... but idk

I would highly, highly recomend Boston College. One of my friend's brother just graduated last year from my high school last year and he is on their soccer team. Their academics are very good too.

BC is great, as is BU - but the two schools are very different. A few of my friends from high school play on the soccer team at BU and they absolutely love it.

Well considering we attract internationals from all over (and have for many, many years), I'd say you'd be fine. Temple itself is quite safe.
