I'm not looking for a chance thread, but instead an evaluation of the schools I'm considering applying to and any other schools I should consider. So far, I'm thinking about:

University of Maryland (Safety)
UVA
UNC
Hopkins
Cornell
Penn

Do I need more matches, more safeties or more reaches?

Also, I'm considering majoring in English but with a minor in bio to put me on a pre-med track. With that in mind, would a school like carnegie mellon be good for me? or hopkins even?

From your statistics I would think that you can add 2-3 additional reaches.

i’m officially editor in chief next year…will that help me?

To me, the big difference between the schools on your list is location. Do you want to be in Philadelphia (big city) or in the gorges (Cornell)? My son took one look at Philadelphia and hated it. My niece fell in love with UNC on her visit. Likes the idea of a college town. Carnegie Mellon would not be a good choice for you. Hard to get A’s there and not particularly strong in English.

I really liked UNC, but isn’t it like impossible to get into OOS. I really liked Philidelphia and I haven’t visited Cornell yet, but I’m going for my Grandpa’s 70th reunion lol. Thanks about Carnegie Mellon… any other schools you’d suggest?

I think you have the stats for your selected schools. You should visit each campus, if possible, and get a feel. I know I prefer some schools over others on your list, but that is my preference not yours.

Adding another safety that you would actually want to attend would be a good idea. Also, another 1 or 2 major reaches, if you really like the school, adds to your chances of getting into a most selective school.

You have done well. Good luck.

How about this list?

University of Maryland – College Park
University of Michigan
University of Virginia
Johns Hopkins University
Washington University in St. Louis
Northwestern University
Cornell University
University of Pennsylvania
Brown University

I know they’re pretty much all reaches except Maryland, but what’s the chance all 8 of the others reject me?

I think you need another safety and match. You are OOS for UVA and U of Mich.

What’s an example of a match you think?

help me please
