I scored a 620 on writing the first time i took this sat without studying. Im taking the test on april 1st and wanted to know the best way to improve my score to 700+.

Aim for an 800 kid, it's not that hard.

I agree with gumball on the first part of what he said, but not completely on the second part. Its not unattainable, I did well on the writing section, above 700 is definitely possible. Just go in there knowing 3 books cold, and write the most generic 5 p-graph essay you can imagine. After that, its grammar questions- the biggest thing i think is to make sure your verbs line up with your subjects.

Look at basic grammar rules.

And where do you find that? :)

Was that a very subtle joke Gumball? If it was, I got it, and it was good.

You find them in like prep books....like the list of the most common ones. I think Sparknotes online (free) has some good lists.

could you give an example of a generic essay?? i keep getting 9's when i need 12's!!!

I think it's hard to go from a 9 to a 12 at this point....it really just depends on your style.

im a good writer in school, i take ap language and comp and i got like A's on my essays, but for this SAT essay, its like everything i kno just goes right out the window..

the same as somebody who is a math expert and has to do a basic question. the essay is basically the L.C.D. of a high school essay, its the five paragraph one theyre looking for.

I know what you mean.

one thing about the essay:

im not sure how much of the essay should be analysis? in some essays, i just see huge descriptions of events that don't seem to analyze and show how the examples prove the thesis...

like in one essay in which were supposed to write what motivates people, conscience or power..

if i used macbeth, what would be better.

A long description about the story of Macbeth, stating how he killed King Duncan to get the throne, how he killed Banquo his friend to insure the security of the throne.

OR

Explain that Macbeth's desire for power overwhelmed his conscience and ultimately led to his decsion to kill Duncan. So for this type, i probably would just write, Macbeth killed Duncan in order to become king..and then start a huge analysis..

Which one?

I don't know why...but it seems like ppl overdo their examples (or I underdo it). Collegeboard doesn't want an "analysis." They want how it relates to the thesis.

so how do you relate it?

Begin with each paragraph on how your example connects back to thesis. The insertexamplehere supports the idea that thesishere by/through means of ...

do you have to devote like 2-3 sentences within the paragraph for connecting the examples back t othe thesis as well or should it pretty much be a huge description with a closing statement?

Don't go into the example TOO much. Just get the basic points of 1.) what the example is, and 2.) how it relates to the thesis. The huge description isn't necessary. Begin with a concise point on how it relates, talk about what it is (this should be the longest, but don't go in too deep, just the basics), and end with a closing statement to sum it up.

The Kaplan SAT Writing Workbook is pretty good, very detailed info on the questions + essay. A bit expensive (around 20$) but I think it's worth it. Try your library, too.

kchen is on the money.
