Help would be FANTASTIC

Hey I am Maddie and I am a junior from Baltimore, Maryland. I go to a very competative private school and am wondering what my chances are at the following, any help would be great!

Stats:
SAT(from a practice, havn't gotten the real ones back yet)

Verbal: 740
Math:590
Writing: 710

GPA: 3.6 unweighted. 3.7 weighted. (my school doesn't offer many APs, I am taking all of the ones available to me next year)

I act regularly and was in two big school productions this year and had big roles. I spend a lot of time with theatre and would love to perform in college but I am not applying to a school specifically for theatre etc.

I take belly dancing outside of school for fun...that's how I get my athletic credits.

I belong to four different clubs and will be the leader of two next year. I am starting an Italian culture club(I am not Italian I am just fascinated with the culture and have been taking Italian privately outside of school for four years and am fluent because I have been there for the past three summers and am doing a homestay there for a month in Rome this summer(SO ****ING EXCITED!!!)) and will be one of the leaders of the algebra project club(not math, more of an advocacy program).

I also applied to go to the Civil Rights Tour that my school offers but I don't know if I was accepted yet. I am hoping/pretty sure I will get in because I am very involved in the community and am close to the woman who runs the tour. We will see though(crosses fingers)

what else?...I am white....very bubbly person...

First semester classes for next year:
AP enviromental
AP Euro
Ottoman Empire(I organized this course with a teacher and will be the teaching assistant...I love turkish culture)
Spanish 2 accelerated (Just started this year and lovvvvve Spanish. I love languages)
Gritty Urban Life(my English)
and the dredded CALCULUS (AHHHHHH KILL ME)

Ok so I would like to hear about my chances with the following schools:

Pitzer
BU
NYU
GW
American
Sarah Lawrence
Scripps
College of Charleston
UPENN: (Both of my parents went to Penn so I guess I will just throw it on the list but I am not very interested)

So there ya go! My list. Any help would be great :-).

okay, so your apparent interest in different cultures is wonderful, as well as your personality. having said that, the math score could hurt you. although it is apparent that you are a humanities type of student (and i am the same way), raising that score will be very beneficial in the admissions process.

i say this especially for NYU. it seems as though they are numbers-based. so, raise that math score and i think you have an excellent chance.

GW & American - i say you're in. if not, i'd be surprised.

also (this is just my opinion), if you aren't interested in UPENN, select another school that fits your preferences. no sense in applying for a reach you don't really like.

hope i helped.

I lived in the Baltimore area, and I'm surprised. You say you are going to a competitive private school, but then you say they offer almost no APs and no IBs. Do they offer some other type of honors courses?

The lack of honors courses will hurt you a little bit--although if your school doesn't offer them, I guess this will be considered.

You have a good shot at a lot of the schools on your list, although some of these schools require interviews I believe (NYU does if you want to go into their music/theatre program).

Anyway,

Pitzer--match

BU--match

NYU--slight reach

GW--match on stats, but you don't fit their profile, so I don't think you'll be accepted

American--match

Sarah Lawrence--match--and your best fit for the type of stuff you probably want to study--but you do know there are 3 girls to every guy here, don't you?

Scripps--reach--and an all girls school--you're aware, I presume?--but it's surrounded by all the Claremont schools (Claremont McKenna, Pomona, Pitzer, Harvey Mudd)--so not really just a one-type school scenario

College of Charleston--match, but you do know there are 2 girls to every 1 guy here, don't you?--do I see a pattern here?--also you'll have to adjust to the southern culture and ways

U Penn--reach--although with both parent's being legacy--probably only a slight reach

I presume American Univ is your safety. If so, you should apply there first. That way if you are rejected, you still have time to pick another safety just in case the other apps don't work out (not that I expect it to be a problem).

Schools like NYU will not give you an answer until April 1st unless you are an ED applicant, so keep this in mind--since it will seem like forever once you send in the app.

Ok so let me give you a little profile of my school so you can understand the AP/accelerated system.

My school is small. I would say there are about 85 kids in my grade. It is known in the Baltimore area as the "hippie school" with a high emphasis on individuality, arts, and community service. They do not offer any AP English because they want students to sign up for English classes we are interested in and not because it says "accelerated" or "ap". The only 11th grade AP option besides math I had was history, and because I love history that is the AP I took. Next year I am taking two APs and one accelerated...and I would say that is definetely well above average at my school(the average might be one AP course considering many to not take any of the options). The only dicipline in which I avoided the AP option was with math. However, I did choose calculus over statistics knowing that that would be more "pleasing" to admissions people.

With that in mind, my school does very well with colleges. Our regular classes are tons of work anyways, and I would say that most of the kids are very bright and interested in school. Out of this years graduating class 10 are going to NYU(NYU and my school have a good relationship...it attracts a lot of the kind of kids that go to my school), and there are always kids that get into ivies every year(Brown is popular), despite not having an incredible amount of AP options. Admissions people always say that they just want to see you taking one of the most rigorous course loads available to you....so anyways that is my schools policy on AP stuff, hope it clears things up.

THANKS FOR THE HELP SO FAR :-).

Real quick, about Scripps. The sat stats are higher than Pitzer's by a lot, but the acceptance rate is much higher. It said like 53 % of the kids get into Scripps and then only 39% get into Pitzer...I dunno it seems strange. Pitzer may be my first choice at this point, and I am going to have an interview anywhere I can.

This is just because I like schools in (or near) cities...most liberal arts schools or schools in cities have a bad girl/guy ratio...I'm not a lesbian...but I want to be a community where that is accepted and I can find all different kinds of people...that is a big reason why I like Pitzer because of its diversity(and it seems like it is a lot like my highschool but in college form.)I really love the sound of the whole Claremont community and that is why I listed Scripps as well.

THANKSSSSSSSSSS I must get back to workkkk.

ladybugs712, where do you get that I said you were lesbian? My only implication was that you prefer a school that has a higher girl to boy ratio--meaning you probably were interested in a school where women are treated at least as equals and where there are a lot of activities focused towards woman's needs--for example, fewer sports activities--and what ones there are have equal activities for both sexes, career planning that is not geared towards heavily male occupations, like engineering or computer science, and campus activities that build a feeling of high achievement for women.

By the way, I live in Santa Cruz Country, which has probably the largest concentration of gays and lesbians in the country outside of San Francisco. The chancellor of the local university (UCSC) is lesbian, and I really could care less one way or the other about someone's sexual preference, which I believe is each individual's concern--so even if you were lesbian, I wouldn't care--and I certainly wouldn't make an issue of it on this forum.

No, my comment was more related to my belief that a lot of these colleges you are applying to are designed with a woman's interest in mind--and less to the college-party scene so prevalent at other schools. It tells me that you are very serious about your studies and that you are not going to school to just get away from home and start drinking or smoking with your buddies.

Take just a few of these colleges--NYU (very high stress, high academic)--and always on the list of "Nobody cares about sports". The Claremont colleges--Pitzer and Scripps included--another extreme academicly focused place. They take a lot of people that have already participated in writing or science competitions. Sarah Lawrence--known for being a bit of an open campus in terms of allowing you to take your major and course load in any direction you want--and not limiting you to real specific already-designed programs. This means you need someone with drive and creativity--and is why I thought you would do well there. Anyway, this was my point.

Sorry, I just misunderstood you.

I know that SLC is right for me academically, I could tell when I visited. However, I am a little worried about the "stereotype" of the students. The school store sold shirts that said "Sarah Lawrence, where even the squirrels where black" and I think I am way to optimistic and generally happy for that kind of attidude. I feel like I would just annoy people.lol

thanks for all your help.

Wow, that is a weird T-shirt.

Well, Pitzer is a good school as well. My best friend in high school went there and then went on for a medical degree at the Albert Einstein medical school at Yeshiva University. Last I knew, he was working at a large hospital in NYC.

Also, I grew up in southern California--and it's a good place to be when you're young--always a lot of activities and places to go.

who doesn't now-a-days?

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i don't want to go to college I hate this process.

I would say that Scripps is a reach - don't be put off because of the high acceptance rate (which has been 46% and 44% in the last few years). The acceptance rate is higher because there are fewer applications, being a small unheard of women's college (self-selecting applicant pool, as opposed to a school like Harvard, where everyone just takes a shot). I would say SATs are probably more indicative of selectivity/difficulty. With that said, I think it's a reach that you may have a pretty good shot at if you show a lot of interest. They are (seemingly) pretty forgiving if you have a weakness in a partcular area (mine was math as well). Your GPA might hurt you, but if you are taking advantage of what's available to you it shouldn't.
