Help your favorite CCer. Berkeley or Cornell?

Riley, have you visited Cornell? I’m stuck between Cal/Davis/Cornell (i’ll leave out Davis for this thread).

Cornell - Actually a really nice community, great alumni network, EASY job access, IVY, great choice of majors, great course offerings, special programs with other schools, very helpful faculty (profs and even the advisors), pretty diverse with regards to students from different states, and small course sizes.

However… tuition (basically got a thousand dollars in FA), weather can be an issue if you are spoiled with CA’s weather, most of my courses from UCSC won’t transfer over so possibly delayed graduation, and sometimes the student population isn’t that friendly/have that California glow.

Cal - One of the best educations you can get for your dollar, location, you might love that Berkeley vibe, great prestige and job prospects.

However… some people don’t like the town, competition for certain majors/classes can make courses more of a struggle than a chance to just learn.

At first I threw away Cornell out of my list because of the price, but I’m slowly starting to like it more and more every day. I’m just not sure exactly how long it will take me to graduate there, so I will make my choice once I calculate that.

Cornell is a great school. I know it might have a higher acceptance rate than the other Ivies, but I think it is wrongly named the “second choice” school for students who did not get in to any other ivies. I visited my cousin this winter break and most people she lived with actually turned down higher institutions to attend Cornell.

You are bringing PhD rankings for his undergrad? By that basis, would you do the following?
Attend UCSD or University of Washington over Princeton, Columbia, University of Chicago, or UVA? (using your NRC rankings)
3-4. Hating on Cornell much, hahaha. If a person has the money or believes Cornell is the right investment, I wouldn’t question them taking it over Cal. My high school graduating class had several people who chose Cal over Cornell and vice-versa.

I’m sure there are people who turn down Cal for UCSC also. There are exceptions to every case but in general it is the reject ivy look up ivy rankings on this site or any other and Cornell consistently shows up as the worse.

It’s master’s and phd rankings. I personally think it’s one of the better ways to gauge their undergrad program. Also theres

Cornell is not a sound investment no matter which way you spin it. Unless you want to major in the Hotel school, what program would you attend Cornell over any other ivy / UCLA/ Cal/Stanford/Mit/Northwester/Unc/U of Chicago etc.

cornell sent me a packet in the mail, and in their section of “current students,” it showed profiles of some students who transferred FROM berkeley (end of their 2nd year) just go TO cornell.

First and foremost, Cornell and Berkeley cost THE SAME for me. (I love being poor for once!)

Secondly, while I greatly appreciate all of your input! I’m fairly certain Brown is the worst ivy. It shows up last one most rankings; US News, for example. As MidnightGolfer said, it just has the highest acceptance rate because it has like three times the amount of students as the other ivies.

HigherHopes do you have a facebook? I feel as if we should talk.

I would pick Cornell- they seem more accommodating to its undergraduates. I was about to apply to cornell but I didn’t have time to finish my app. I know cornell is in the middle of nowhere but oh well, more transcendentalist adventures.

And people need to stop talking about how cornell is the lowest ivy or w/e; that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. All 8 universities stand strong without the ivy label.

@peterr86, I’m not sure where your abnormal resentment towards cornell is coming from… did you get rejected or something?

Brown is absolutely not the worst ivy. In my opinion, Brown is the best ivy after Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. It’s a wonderful place to be an undergraduate. It’s lower rank means nothing.

IMO, all top private schools are better places to do undergrad than top public schools, simply by virtue of the fact that their funding isn’t guaranteed and they have to make an EXTRA compelling case to compete with the virtually free public schools. Most top public schools are top because they do great research and not because they offer great educations; by state mandate, their undergrad programs are dictated more by quantity quotas than quality quotas.

That said, someone with a great level of comprehension at a top public school is probably more determined and self-starting than someone with the same level of comprehension at a top private, and consequently more capable of success barring other factors.

The best humanities instructor I ever had was a Dartmouth alum. What made him great wasn’t necessarily his insight, but how considerate he was of his students’ needs – which was something he learned from his teachers at Dartmouth no doubt.

haha saying Cornell is the worst of the Ivy league schools isn’t saying much…that’s like saying _____ is the best community college…it’s still community college. Cornell is still an Ivy league school…

My ultimate goal is an ivy, but for undergrad i don’t think it matters as much. I would go with Berkeley if you plan on continuing on, but Cornell if you plan on stopping with a BA.

really vintij i was thinking other way around because of grade deflation at berkeley it will be tougher to get a high gpa for grad school while the whole ivy league is notorious for grade inflation

i wonder if janethedoe is fat?

cornell. dat ivy league, you bout to make mad connects son, disregard females acquire currency nah mean bruh?

Na i personally didn’t mind Cornell at all.

I am mostly speaking from my perspective.

If your are putting an investment into your education spending 4 times at a “ivy” vs Cal just doesn’t translate into future earnings if you consider how much more you have to make.

Just my opinion

@peter, the OP is paying the same for both.

Oh I forgot to ask you riley, did you get into CAS?

Random_Monkey- you caught me! i am a fat, ugly, dumb slut.

@Janethedoe HA! i caught you

btw congrats on getting into ucb and ucla.

thnx

for the record, you rnt my fav ccer!!!
