Help your favorite CCer. Berkeley or Cornell?

YES I AM!

And no, edbraga, I got into Human Ecology. That makes a difference, doesn’t it?

I have a friend who’s a Human Development major in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell. She likes the academics well enough, she’s just not a big fan of how rural it is. She’s about to enter her senior year in the fall, and will graduate having spent three semesters away from Cornell in total (one in Washington DC, one in New York City, and one in Rome, Italy). They’re both great schools, just make sure the environment is right for you.

Eh not really, I’m just curious.

It’s funny because I actually disregarded Cornell after getting into Cal because I didn’t want to spend the extra money. However, I’m going to visit Cornell again in 2 weeks one just because this thread started to renew my interest.

I think my biggest decision now is if I want a major of Environmental Economics and Policy (Cal) OR Cornell’s AEM - Finance (or international trade & development). Also I’m technically already a Cornell student because I deferred my spring admissions to this fall :/. Keep those pros/cons lists coming!

As people have mentioned, there is a high suicide rate associated with Cornell.
Who knows why? Maybe its the ugly weather and the isolation of Ithaca or maybe just maybe it has bad juju.

Stay in sunny, lovely, beautiful California.
Go to Berkeley.

“…there is a high suicide rate associated with Cornell”

Note the careful phrasing, “associated with”, as opposed to “at”. Because, actually the rate over time there is not particularly high, notwithstanding the anomalous recent cluster.

“Who knows why?”
Most published speculation is it is because of the dramatic and public nature of the suicides that do occur there, involving the gorges. though the actual rate there is not remarkable.

"Maybe its the ugly weather and the isolation of Ithaca or maybe just maybe it has bad juju. "

Ithaca’s weather and location were doubtlessly not materially different in 2005-2008 when there were no suicides there whatsoever, or over longer periods where the rate is below average. But maybe juju??? The weather is cold in winter, but I liked it the other seasons. It is spectacularly beautiful in the Fall. As for location, Ithaca is actually a very nice place to live. When one is “isolated” in a community together with 30,000 fellow students one is not really isolated, by their very presence.

"Suicide rises significantly in Fall 2009/Winter 2010 "
a tragic suicide cluster, something that unfortunately happens from time to time, all over, relating to publicity & copycat phenomena.

The fences were deemed necessary to interrupt the current cluster.

"Stay in sunny, lovely, beautiful California. "
I’ll give you sunny, but IMO, to me, Cornell is actually the more beautiful setting of the two. It is nestled within the gorges and nature, and Ithaca is ringed by state parks.

This is some of what I was talking about:

go to cornell. snow is infinitely better than rain. also, i know hot/cute korean girls there if you’re into them

wow monydad way to make mountains out of molehills!!! hahahahahaha

Seriously though, beauty is subjective. IMHO, California is so beautiful even her ugly urban parts attract me. She is diverse and wonderful.

The siren gorges of Cornell can never compare to the beauty I see in Strawberry Creek at Berkeley… at least if you fall at Berkeley it wont be to your death!
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8b/Strawberry_Creek_near_Dwinelle_Hall.jpg

@Mythology

Are you KIDDING ME? lol you think SNOW is better than rain.

I’m not talking about Christmas morning omg snow lets make snow angel. Once you live in the snow year round it’s absolutely horrible

I hope you enjoy getting up half hour early to defrost your car. Your car won’t last past 5 years because of all the salt on the ground.

god snow is absolutely horrible and it’s the reason why i love California so much =)

p.s for every hot Korean girl at Cornell there are 10 time more fitter and hotter girls at every U.C. Woudl you rather go to a school where the girls stay buttoned up for 1/2 the school year or where girls can walk around in mini skirts and tank tops for most of the school years

The beginning of this thread started out so great but then it transcended into “on-topic discussions.”
I’m severally disappointed.

i was born and raised in New York. I now live in socal. I hate the rain, I love the snow.

erm… There’s a reason UCSD has a reputation for bad looking girls (i don’t think so, but there is a reputation), my friends go to Berkeley and they said the quality of girls there are horrible as well. Truthfully, only LA, SB, I, have better looking girls than the ones that I’m talking about at Cornell. That said, Berkeley rains all the time, so no, they won’t be in miniskirts and tank tops.

Anyway, it depends on the major anyway, but for the most part, Berkeley will have a better academic experience for most majors. I’d probably go to Cornell though.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! PootieTang’s comment on Page 4 made this thread absolutely worth it! Well done, sir!

Ahem. Right. Cal or Cornell. Easy choice! As a person who loves the snow, I may be a bit biased here! But…

Go to Cal. =]
