well im looking to apply to the uc schools but im not sure how well im shaping up
1. 3.8 gpa uc weighted (not too great i know)
2. 2010 sat (hopefully better in june)
3. 710, 720 on sat twos
4. varsity sport 3 yrs, captain, key club officer, pretty decent hours volunteering
So my question is which schools should i be aiming for? And how much is riding on my essay and recommendations?
My counselor kind of just answered the question indirectly so im going to your guys' opinion..If you have any input its greatly appreciated, thanks for your time!

Yeah, applying to UC schools is fine. Retake the SAT. You're doing fine--you seem kind of like the average student, though.

UC's do not ask for Rec letters.

What is your UW gpa? Or UC matriculated GPA? A weighted gpa does nothing for us.

Aside from the gpa question, you look to be in good shape for all the UC's. Spend TIME on crafting your essays and EC sheet as those are the only things you have to really compensate for your gpa. I've also heard that an exceptional essay really tips the favor for the upper tier UC's( Cal and LA)- I know a guy who didn't have the most stellar academic record( granted, he did go to a top 50 public high school...but with that, there were like a million awesome kids from his school who applied to Cal as well so...pro/con to that) but was a real college freak and wrote a beautiful essay- and got into Cal, defying everyone's expectations! So, don't underestimate the essay- it will be crucial in your case because you will be competing against many who have the same activities but may have better gpa/test scores so do all you can to shape the factors that are in your hands.

On that note, it would be in your best interest to raise your SAT as much as possible- it can't hurt and it will definitely boost your chances.

You have a good shot( again, I can't judge without the UW gpa as academic credentials are primary in UC admissions) at all the UC's except for CAL and LA which are always iffy unless you are like flawless gpa, steller SAT's, and great EC's.
