Okay so for anyone who has attended UF as a freshman for the Summer B term, how were you able to receive financial aid? This is really important because of course Bright Futures does not cover summer and my mom did some research and said that Pell Grant for summer means that I'd have to give it up for either fall or spring. And the scholarships I may get are fall. I will be calling my advisor today, but for any current students, how much can I expect to receive???

Did that policy come into effect yet? I thought it was still in proposal. Hmm…

Well, first thing first, make sure you have a FAFSA on file for the 2010-2011 term AND 2011- 2012 term. The 2010-2011 term is for financial aid this summer. I started during Summer B, and I made the mistake of not having 2010-2011 filed until maybe a month or two before classes. I still ended up okay though.

If you want to minimize expenses, live in Thomas or Buckman(non AC dorms). Bring a portable AC, and you’ll be good. Live in any of the traditional halls to save expenses. Avoid Lakeside, Hume, or Beaty for summer as those are a bit more expensive. Do not get the meal plan. The meal plan is expensive, and you’ll save alot by cooking. Although, this debates on what you like to eat and how often you like to eat as well.

Look into scholarships. It’s still not too late to apply. Apply for regional scholarships in your area, look into UF specific scholarships(although many are competitive). Also, after they offer you financial aid, you can always contact them. Also, let them know you’re interested in Federal Work Study. There are many locations where you can work on campus through federal work study jobs. Good luck, and let me know if you have any other Q’s!
