I really want to go to Pitt but I did not receive any form of aid, need-based or non-need based. I know my family and I can not afford the tuition since I am out-of-state. How can my family and I help manage to cost? Or at least still make it a viable option for me to go to. For me, the cost of attendance would be in $50,000 range.

The unpleasant answer is that there isn’t any way for you and your family to manage that kind of cost. You need to look at schools your budget can afford.

If you can’t pay Pitt’s costs, you will have to look at a more affordable option.

One of my son’s top choices is Pitt. Our limit of what we can pay is $35K which is just about what tuition, fees, room and board cost this year for an OOSer. If he decides to go there, he will have to pay for his books and living expenses, as well as for any cost increases that may occur. I don’t know where you are getting your $50K figure. but it is part of the college search process to find schools that you can afford. We are not getting financial aid from Pitt either, and if my son cannot meet the cost from his savings and summer earnings, he will get a part time job during the year and/or take out a Stafford loan. That is limited to $5500 for his first year, which I think is about the limit of what he should borrow anyways.

If we were not able to pay the amount, or any amount for him, he would have stayed at home and commuted to some colleges in the area which he could afford with his savings, the Stafford and a part time job. He actually got acceptances from 2 schools that are doable with just a few thousand dollars from us, and If we throw in $5-10K, he has some state school choices as well that are all away colleges. He was also accepted to some schools that cost $55K that offered him no aid, and would not be doable even with our help and with his savings, loan and work. Those schools just went right off the table. If Pitt does indeed cost $50k a year, it is not an option for him either. We all have to work with what we can afford.

Pitt cost about 34k this past year for OOS tuition, fees, R&B. Add books, travel and living expenses and it should be under 40k, still a lot of money. D2 was looking at Pitt and though it would be a viable option with a scholarship for full OOS tuition, however she only got 12k/yr. So, with a COA of at least 27k/yr, she has much less expensive options at IS and OOS publics as well as privates for the same or less. So, Pitt drops off the list.

The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences costs around $30,000 for OOS and I live in California so traveling to and fro Pittsburgh for Christmas and Summer was also factored in, as well as the traditional room and board and books.

What are your other choices since Pitt will NOT be affordable?

how much can your parents pay?
