Help

My son is planning on being an incoming freshman this year however received some very dissapointing news in the mail from UTD. He was told that even though he met every deadline (early may) for housing he was on a waiting list for any sort of On Campus housing. Bad news for us in many ways, one he was awarded a scholarship to cover tuition and living expenses, however he has been informed that the living expenses portion of his scholarship can only be used for on campus housing. The ONLY option he has be given by the school is a list of OFF campus apartaments that are on the busline. Considering that we live at least 6 hrs from Richardson and are in no financial position to pick up this extra expense left behind by the unusable protion of his scholarship he may have no choice but to stay home and put his ambitions on hold.

Has anyone else received this same disappointing news and is there anyone who knows of a solution or way to work this out

Hi, if your son has a facebook page he can join the class of 2015 page where there is a discussion board about people finding room mates for off campus housing. Maybe he can find a couple other guys and split rent

Thank you for your suggestion I will have him do that right away

No problem! Good luck!!

We had the same dissapointing news for our daughter… It is quite deceiving to offer all these scholarships when the university is unable to meet the need… I think they need to better plan and ensure that people receiving scholarship can indeed get accomodation or if they can’t accomodate the need (to no fault of the recipient), they should allow for the scholarship to be applied outside the campus…
We are also searching for apartments and roomates…

the thing is, so many students are commuters so they have to offer the housing stipend to more people than there are spots for. maybe it’s something i should bring up in student gov

Not sure there are so many commuter freshman anymore. With the new freshman residences, there should be about 900 to 950 freshman in residence now out of 1300 ? Definitely the majority in residence…

When will they release the off waitlist result? And did this problem happen last year?

He can find people to room with on off-campus housing they can split the bills.
