Help.

Okay, so just finished reviewing my massive amounts of wrong answers and I found that 4 of them just doesn't make sense..

MATH:
Section 2, Question 20:

points A,B, and X do not lie on the same line. Point X is 5 nits from A and 3 unites from B. HOw any other points in the same plane as A, B, an X are also 5 units from A and 3 units from B.

a- none
b- one
c- two
d- four
e- more than four

what the crap is this question even asking?

WRITING (ew)
Section 5, Question 3, 5, 33

3) The morning commuter train ran behind schedule, [and this made the professor missing] class.

The answer is C. But C is [so the professor missed]. However, if you plug that into the sentence, it's a comma splice right? I can see [The morning commuter train ran behind schedule] be an independent sentence AND [so the professor missed class] another independent sentence. I picked E- the professor was missing.

5) The curator of the Houdini Historic [ Museum, in announcing that new interactive displays would help visitors to] understand some of the secrets of the famous escape artist.

The answer is D- [Museum announced that new interactive displays would help visitors to]. However I picked - [Museum, who announced that new interactive displays will help visitors]. HOW? I modified the curator with WHO. Okay I think I used incorrect terminology, but yeah..

33) [When] L'Enfant suggested [to build the United States Capitol [at the center of] Washington D.C., he also [offered] to design a landscaped mall nearby.

I picked no error because it's parallel structure. However, they said the B - TO BUILD is wrong.

Help? Sorry if this sounds so dumb to you. But I just don't understand how I got it wrong..

THANKS!

bump?

Haha I missed this one too. Alright, if point X is 5 units from A and 3 units from B, then we can assume that point X has coordinates of (5,0), point A has coordinates of (0,0), and point B has coordinates of (5,-3). The question is asking how many other points can be in the same plane as A, B, and X and are also 5 units from A and 3 from B. If we flip the graph that we just made and reflect it on the y-axis, we find that the point (-5,0) also lies 5 units from A and 3 units away from the reflected point B.

Therefore the answer is (B): One.

If you assume E, then you’re practically saying that “The morning commuter train ran behind schedule, the professor was missing class.” This CANNOT be correct, as this creates a comma splice. 2 independent clauses cannot be simply joined by a comma. Choice (C) is correct, because it corrects the splice by inserting a subordinate clause after the comma.

If you wanted to modify the museum curator with “who”, then you would have to follow the correction with another correction. Read the following sentence: "The curator of the Houdini Historic Museum, who announced that new interactive displays will help visitors understand some of the secrets of the famous escape artist. “Who” creates an adverb clause, which in effect makes the sentence turn into 2 subordinate clauses. Therefore the correct answer is (D), which deletes the comma and doesn’t make an illogical comparison.

This one is a bit awkward. Parallel structure doesn’t particularly apply to this question. Let me quote silverturtle’s solution to this question: “‘Suggested’ takes an infinitive complement; you just have to know that or be able to tell by using your ear.” Therefore, “to build” must be changed to “building”.

Why would it be a comma splice? So is used as a conjunction.

Your choice lacks the verb. Therefore, it is a sentence fragment. Can you locate the verb in that sentence??

So are you saying that the last one is …“suggested building”…

Haha thanks guys. I finally understand why I got it wrong. Thank you all ^_^

And warpclaw, yes, that’s what the answer key said…

so= subordinating conjunction → dependent clause.

I believe “so” is a conjunction used for cause and effect relationship between two independent clauses.

The morning commuter train ran behind schedule, so the professor missed class.
Another way of writing this sentence would be,
Because the morning commuter train ran behind schedule, the professor missed class.

Thank you for the response. If you are taking the PSAT tomorrow I wish you the best of luck :)
