i have a concern. my best friend told me something horrible today. he said that on his UC apps he in a way plagiarized on one of his essays. he paraphrased two sentences and took one or two and then wrote the rest of the essay in his own words. i feel horrible that he did it but he is now feeling extremely guilty and very worried he might be rejected because of that. if they do find out he has other options, but if they dont find out, then is it possible that they will find out later on? im so scared for him. he doesnt want to be rescinded once he is in college or something and hes an excellent student. any suggestions?

um i dont know if they will find out afterward. but during the admissions process of course there is a chance they might

..he paraphrased two sentences?

can they really find out?

why'd he do it in the first place

yeah i dont know i think if they find out during admissions he wont get accepted obviously. afterward, i dont know whether he would be rescinded because i dont know if they would find out.

yeah why did he do it

yeah i dont know why he did it but does anyone know any more information about this? im really worried for him

I just can't see anyone going back through old applications of admitted students and checking for things like that, unless he becomes a national-level politician someday and gets reporters digging into his obscure past. Many admissions offices don't even keep those materials after one year. -So- He'll either get caught now, during the admissions process or not at all.

LOL. Can you imagine the admissions officer googling random sentences from personal statements just to see if someone is plagerizing?

i think they'll only notice if the two sentences he plagerized aren't consistent with the tone, diction, or voice of the rest of the essay. otherwise it'll just be w/e.

yeah i guess.

if they do find out though, and this is an essay your friend has sent other places (perhaps even if he hasn't), the college may well call the other places your friend applied and let them know. they notify each other of unethical behavior (not withdrawing RD apps after ED, dishonesty in applications, etc.) all the time. So don't just consider this an issue that affects the one school.

beyond that, i'm afraid i can't offer much help--it seems wrong to me to say "oh they probably won't catch it so don't worry," but without a good idea of what the schools might do if they catch you, i can't exactly advise your friend to fess up, either.
