hi everyone, im a junior and i am stressed out-
i want to go to penn state university park but i don't if i have the grades

gpa- 3.6 (9th, 10th, 11th)
havn't taken SATs yet
national honor society, deca, and history club
played a sport all through out high school but quit soccer sophmore year
out of state

i know its kind of hard to tell because im only a junior but im so worried about not getting in.

yeah make sure you get three things done
1. Keep your grades up
2. Get a good score on the SATs (pref math & cr)
3. Make sure you apply early next year(November 30(prideadline) at the latest if you want the best chance)

YESS, SAT is critical. If you get above a 1250 You have An EXCELENT CHANCE. and anything around 1190 you still are a good match, depending on your EC's and other stuff.

PSU88 - Have you actually visited the campus? Would you be willing to start in the summer? Have you looked at their admissions website? If you're not a great standardized test taker, have you taken a SAT prep class? Are you registered to take the SAT this spring? Are you aware that 75% of the PSU decision is based on your GPA just through the end of your Junior year.

Boosting your gardes this year, becoming well-acquainted with the school through visits and website, and talking to folks (like on this board) who have successfully applied and/or attend are all things you can do with that anxious energy.

By this time last year, I had visited about a half dozen colleges and had already set up a dozen more for visits - you may find that once on other campuses that there are others you love as well. I surprised myself during my visits - some schools that I loved "on paper" or had worshipped from afar - really turned me off when I visited. Others that I considered so-so, I loved once I got on campus. Now my heart still belongs to a school that I've wanted to attend since I was a kid - but I have expanded my landscape to incldue other schools as well - since any Guidance Counselor will tell you - college admissions involve a significant amount of risk and luck - so you need a backup plan.

GGT- I have not visited the campus yet but I am going up to see a basketball game and tour the campus very soon. Tonight I'm actually going to something in Washington DC where they're talking about the admissions process. I'm not exactly sure what it is though. I definitly will say that I can go to the summer session, because that could boost my chances, right? I'm a fairly decent test taker, so I'm not that worried about the SATs, but I am taking a course starting in Februrary. Do you think my gpa is fine? I've increased it every year: 3.5 (9th), 3.6 (10th), and 3.7 (11th). I am going to look at other college campuses as well.

PSU88 - Well thats a great start - hope you enjoyed the session tonight - they look at your overall weighted GPA as shown on your transcript. And yes - being willing to take summer session helps your chances. I never took a SAT prep class - I agree with CH121S personally - but some people benefit. I play on the computer a lot (obv) - so I played with the Kaplan SAT prep computer program for a few hours the week before I took it the first time just to get an idea of how the questions were set up.

Many of us with B+ averages and good but not awesome SAT's are still waiting - those with 3.9 - 4+ GPA's have mostly gotten acceptances first. So the more you can do with your GPA - the better. Good luck!
