Help.

I know this is a kind of vague question
but in general how many colleges do Indian students normally apply??

I just want to know how much can be managed in terms of apps , the standardized tests and our school exams :(

While I think there is no set number as it would depend on lot of factors including your spending power as each application would cost you about $60-70 in application fee + 40-50 dollars of Courier and the time for each application would vary according to each college’s requirement of essays and supplements and add to that the research that would need to be put in while shortlisting each college. I would think the norm from India would be about 10 colleges. 2 ‘Reach’, 6 ‘Matches’ and 2 ‘Safeties’.

Also in my D school they clearly set the limit to 10-12 colleges as the school had to deal with huge amount of paperwork with regards to each application. And it all piles up for everybody, the students, parents, counsellor, teachers who write LOR, the Courier guy engaged with the school and followed by tracking of each application at about the same time.

It depends upon person to person. I know a guy who had applied to as much as 20 Universities.
So make a list of schools according to your stats. Normally, the list includes 2-3 safety schools, 2-3 reach schools and 2-3 match schools.
Good Luck :)

Ideally you should apply to 2 reach, 2 matches and 1 safety… This way your essays will essay your character really well :)

In my opinion, 6 is cutting it too fine.

When on eapplies to UK through UCAS they have a limit of 5 applications. In that case one applies to all 5 where one would be a ‘fit’ in terms of grades. But for US if one is to split it into ‘Reach’, ‘Match’ and ‘Safety’ categories, then I believe one needs to cast a wider net.

6 would be good number for US if all the colleges one was appplying to were mostly safeties.
