Alright, for context: I am an Asian Male Junior who goes to a competitive public high school aiming for HYPSM. I have always been enrolled in most rigorous curriculum. Freshman was all honors, and I got 2 A- and the rest A. Sophomore I got all A's. So far bearable. But Junior year came around and I guess I was feeling pretty good about myself so I took 5 APs, 2 of which are known to kill your GPA. After first quarter I ended up with an 83 in AP Chem and an 84 in AP English. I have a feeling that these two might end up as B+ for the year, and I am really worried. Is this going to keep my out of HYPSM? My EC's are pretty solid (two on an international level), but my grades I feel are just not there especially cuz im asian. Advice, or thoughts?

Thank you so much

You’re lucky, an 84 and an 84 are Cs at my school

If it makes you feel any better, you probably never had any chance at HYPSM anyway.

No one is going to be rejected on the basis of a single B, and probably not on the basis of two Bs either. (When I say this, I mean that someone who otherwise would have been accepted is probably not going to get rejected just because they have one or two Bs. But people are often rejected for no particular reason at all, just because the other candidates are better.)

But multiple Bs and A minuses aren’t going to look good. Do you know what your unweighted GPA and class rank are?

Yeah right now im in top 6 percent, but that will probably drop down to lets say 10 percent if I get two B+. Im not sure of my uw GPA

im going to bump this

You should still apply unless your GPA is far below the averages (like .5 lower).

Just do your best, apply, and hope to get in.

worst case scenario would be 3.87ish. but im asian

Good grief, dude! A 3.87 is not bad at all. And contrary to CC opinion, Asians (and people of any ethnicity) can get into HYPSM without a perfect 4.0 GPA.

I’m just worried. the most likely scenario is that by the end of junior year, I will have 3 A minuses and 1 B, placing me still among the top 10 percent (most likely like top 8 percent). The B will be in AP Chemistry and then the other A minuses in 2 honors classes and AP English. I’m just worried that I’m going to mess up my chances at hypsm because of my GPA because I feel my ec’s are solid

Like heather said, they will not break your application. If you get rejected then you would’ve been rejected anyways. Don’t worry so much about your numbers and focus more on doing what you’re passionate about.
