So I recently got an email from CWRU saying that they have concerns about my recent academic performance, and that if I want to give them information explaining this, I have to give it to them by July 16. I'm panicking right now, because I really don't want to get rescinded.
Basically, I got 3 C's senior year 2nd semester. I was kind of hoping the email wouldn't come, bu I guess this has to be dealt with. The main problem really, was that I jumped from taking 1 AP class junior year to basically all AP classes except for marching band senior year, to compensate for the lack of AP classes I took junior year (I didn't really have control over this. I would've taken more junior year if I could've.) That was probably the worst decision I have ever made, and I still regret it. Long story short, I got really burnt out and unmotivated, and my grades suffered as a result. My teachers also decided to dump more projects/homework/tests on me 2nd semester to prepare for the AP tests, which also contributed to my bad grades 2nd semester.
I did get good AP scores this year though, which is a relief. 5's on the AP tests for the classes I got C's in (except for English Lit), and 4's for the others. I hope this helps my case.
I really need tips, because I'm really scared right now. If anyone could help me get through this, I would be really grateful.

ewintu - you will have to explain, in a contrite letter, the reasons for the grades. You will need to “own” the situation vs. using wording such as “teachers decided to dump more projects…” You can’t blame teachers, etc. - they all do that towards the end of the semester. Since AP exams start a few weeks before the end of many school calendars, teachers are crunched for time. It helps that you did well on most of the AP exams since it does demonstrate mastery of the material.

CWRU probably would have preferred a more proactive approach on your part by giving them a heads up/explanation on the grades before they received your final transcript but that’s water on the bridge. I would include wording as to what you learned from the 2nd semester slump and what steps you would take to avoid that in the future - all couched in positive words.

I know high schools are on summer break now, but is your college counselor available/reachable? Not sure about the setup at your school but he/she might have some suggestions on how to approach CWRU’s request.

Good luck.

I would emphasize the AP tests…that you did learn the material, even if you didn’t keep up with the assignments which you know is wrong.

Also when reading this article <a href=“A Warning: Colleges Can Change Their Minds - The New York Times”>A Warning: Colleges Can Change Their Minds - The New York Times;
it seems the point is to make sure you know that you have to be serious about school and is unlikely to rescind your acceptance.

I would look up what resources CWRU has to support students…and say something like that you know now to take advantage of resources such as Professor Office Hours, Study Groups, Peer Writing Resources, Tutoring, etc. and that learnign the material is important, but finishing all assignments to demonstrate to the professor that you have learned the material is just as important.

Did you get rescinded or not?
