Is that 3.0 official or did you calculate it yourself? 3.0 is generally seen as the borderline between “should definitely go to college” and “perhaps an easier college would be better”.

i calculated it myself. In India there isn’t a GPA system

safety schools meaning?

Safety: schools that you are certain getting in without financial problem.

NO, YOU SHOULD NOT CALCULATE YOUR GPA ON YOUR OWN. School grade conversion is not as easy as simple math. For example, country A’s 80% can be as good as 95% of country B. You know what I am saying?

I agree with paul2752; converting percentages in India’s grading system to a 4-point scale is probably not very reliable. Unless your school somehow gives letter grades (A, B, C, D, F), don’t try to compute GPA yourself.

One other thing, SAT II scores are not out of 2400; they are always recorded as separate scores (e.g. 780 on Chemistry, 750 on Physics, etc.).

In addition, for an Indian, you’d need to have one non-science SAT Subject as so many Indian applicants apply for STEM and only submit STEM subject tests…
Don’t “calculate” your GPA. It’s likely then that you don’t have a 3.0… which is good for you!

How did convert your 10-point Indian GPA to the 4-point US scale? You simply did (4/10) * Indian GPA ?? :frowning:

i found out a formula on the internet which was like this:-
(Percentage received/20) -1

If anyone has any as to how do I convert my %s to GPA?

As we have all said, do not try to convert percentages to GPA, as that can vary by school. See http://www.quora.com/What-is-the-GPA-US-System-equivalent-of-70-Indian-system

okay cool. But then how can i know if the percentages that i have received are competitive or not?

also… It isn’t definitive on how do i get to know what my GPA could be ?

Asking colleges are good ways to know what your US gpa would be. Who knows? Maybe its good enough for merit scholarship from top 80 to 100 schools

something i found. do you think that is legit?
If so my GPA should jump to 3.5+

This is a better one.

Are you sure this is legit?

We can give you a rough estimation if you tell us what percentage in the national exam boards get the grades you have.
In the US, 8/10 is okay if you’re interested in a not very selective college but rankly it bars you from most colleges in the top 100. In Brazil, an 8 is top 10%. In France, it’s top 2%. In Iran, it’s top 20%. In Canada, it’s an A-. As far as I know, a 7 in CBSE is considered an A. This is why it’s super important your grading scale appears in the school report, ie., what percentage nationally typically get an 8? a 7.5? a 7? a 6.5? etc. What percentage in your school? Is your school’s grading “harsh”, ie., is there grade deflation to challenge the students, so that a student with a 7 in your school can be expected to get an 8? Or do they grade “on par”, ie., students in your school who get an 7 can be pretty assured, barring any super bad luck, to get a 7 in their board exams? This information MUST appear on your Secondary School Profile because while advisers have an idea about international school systems, they can’t know the local variations.

Excellent students, those hoping to get into a top 50 school, tend to have 3.75 or more. Of course, there are students with less than that at top colleges, but they bring something else to the table, and those are NEVER international students who need financial aid. To get financial aid, you basically need to stand out against a pool of applicants from your entire COUNTRY. The more you apply to colleges that aren’t very well-known in India, but better your odds (and the fact a college is unknown in India does NOT mean it’s not high-quality, but as you know, each country has its own biases or blinders. People on this website are very cognizant of high-quality colleges.)

the school generally grades us so that we can perform better and struggle to get more better marks in board exams. i know this because it had happened to me in my 10th grade too. I was given a grand total of 70% in school semester exams but then my percentage took a frog leap to 91.6% in my Board certified exams. And also i tried WES suggested by paul in his post. That jumped my GPA to 3.8. Now I am not very sure as to what my official GPA could be. In my 9th grade i received a “Distinction” grade. I have no idea what it means in a Letter grading system. In my 10th grade as i mentioned above i received 91.6% in my Board Certification Exam. Now to note that in my country we have high school only till 10th grade. So we need to apply for Junior colleges and I got into one of the most selective junior college. So basically we’re all very talented. But to remind us that it is not the end of the world we are graded harshly in our semester exams. I managed to only receive 65% in my 11th grade. This was the story of all of us in my junior college. the same thing continued in our 12th grade where i received 70% in my mid-term exams but then jumped right off to 93% in our Board Certified exams. Now tell me what would my estimated GPA be ?
P.S. I’m not very sure how accurate WES is, but it showed me a GPA of 3.5 for 65% in my 11th grade. Considerring that i checked out my cumulative GPA from 9th grade right to 12th grade “mid-term” it goes like 3.8+4+3.5+3.8/4 = 3.775 (approximately 3.8).

Please tell me what my situation could be?

One thing to note. My board of education wasn’t CBSE but SSC/HSC. There isn’t a huge difference between both 'em. The grading is very much identical in both of 'em.
