I'm currently a junior at Wilson SHS, in Washington DC, and I've finally come to the point where I realize that all the slacking I've done, is about to do me in. My grades sucks. There is no way around it. My grades are low. Not because I can't handle the work, but because I chose not to do a lot of it. Although I know it's way too late, and I put myself in this position, I need a little guidance. My GPA after my junior year, will be a cummalitive 2.5. I'm currently taking two AP courses, and at the end of the year, they should read, AP English-B & AP US History-D. Although my grades are bad, I do have my bright spots. I'm an All-Star member of the debate team. I have tons of awards, and statewide recognition. I'm an African American student (Aff. Action?), that attends a great public high school. I have a few widely known teachers that can write very good recommendations for me. My community service hours aren't great, but they're at a steady 150. And my SAT scores are coming in soon, but I think they're pretty good.

Right now, I need help finding out, where I have a shot getting into. I want to study journalism or something in the sports field (sports writer, agent, manager). I have had my heart set at attending a school like Univ. of Michigan, Maryland, Michigan State, Northeastern, Boston College, or something along those lines. And I don't know if that is even an option anymore. Please help me out.

Hm.. I'd say that you should wait for your SAT scores to get back. Perhaps if you did okay you still have a chance. If not, it's still okay. Make sure you do very well and start working on your college app essays over summer or ASAP. and try to get excellent recommendations. Stand out from the crowd and create a hook. I've heard of 2.5's getting into pretty good colleges. Definitely not top-tier anymore, (Ivies, HYPSM, Duke, NWestern, etc...) but still a good shot at some others. Good Luck. best wishes.

thanks, but what is HYPSM? and do i still have a shot at michigan?

HYPSM is harvard, yale, princeton, stanford, and MIT, University of Missouri has an excellent journalism program you may want to check that out

sorry if this seems harsh...but I think your gonna have a really really tough time getting into michigan...while you seem to have alot of good ecs...it cant really make up for the fact that you got a really low gpa...people w/ 3.0 uw gpas w/ great ecs are considered borderline applicants....w/ a 2.5 it would be even tougher...

thanks for the help, and the honesty

what about a school like univ. of wisconsin-madison?

I don't think you'll get into Michigan, considering how insanely competitive it was this year. I, along with several other CCers was waitlisted. My stats were:

SAT: 2130
GPA: 3.39 UW 7 AP's
I applied in late September and got deferred and my semester grades were a 3.83 UW GPA with 4 AP's.

It's only gonna be worse next year.

That said, I think Mich, Wisconsin, BC are all reaches, unless your SAT score is phenomental, and even then, grades are still the most important factor.

Of course, the fact that your a black male from a DC public high school will only help you.
