Hello, I am new to this forum, and we are looking for advice. My son is a rising senior football player who is being recruited hard by Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Dartmouth. He has been told by all coaches that he is in band 2 of the AI (29 ACT and 3.45 gpa). He is a good student but not a rock star scholar, and I assume most kids at the Ivies fall in the rock star category. Questions we have are:
How difficult is the adjustment to Ivy academics for a recruited athlete?
Any tips for an incoming freshman athlete, on adjusting academically?
When should you request a pre-read for academics from a coach? And when should you receive a response?
As for the adjustment to Ivy academics for athletes, I would say it’s mostly dependent on discipline and time allocation. No doubt it will be overwhelming at times, but you get better at managing sports/academics as time goes on.
There are a lot of resources available to all students (not just athletes) to help with tutoring, etc. but you have to seek them out and make use of them.
I can’t answer most of your questions. But I did have a relative who went to Princeton and played football. He played one year only as the time was too much to support his engineering degree. He was salutation at a private school with strong academics though. I also know of some female recruits to Harvard from the same school that were not considered the rock star category but did go to Harvard and seemed to do very well. I think your son would do well to assume it is a big adjustment. Don’t they answer questions about academic support?
