If there are any current or former Davidson students out there, I have a couple of questions regarding student life! I am having trouble deciding whether to apply ED or RD…I absolutely loved Davidson when I visited, but I would love to know more about student life from anyone who has some time! Thanks
I went to Davidson many years ago, but I may be able to add some insight. What questions do you have?
I’ll answer broadly as an alum and parent of a prospective Davidson student.
What hasn’t changed about Davidson over the years is that the full focus of the school in on undergraduate teaching. Every school says that, but at a small liberal arts school, it’s true. Professors are accessible: their doors are open, discussion is encouraged inside & outside the classroom. Students are expected and do attend classes, which are small, 20 or fewer students for most classes. You won’t have a TA teaching your class, ever. I’m sure you heard this on your tour, but the Honor Code is important at Davidson–because of it, there is trust, and you can self-schedule your exams, without being monitored. I can’t begin to tell you what a benefit that was for me.
About the students: far more diverse than in the past, but not as diverse as some schools. Big fraternity scene, but not as wild or intense as bigger schools; many parties are open to all. And many students are independent. The women’s eating houses are self-selective: no rush (although there are minority sororities now). The students and the campus environment are extremely friendly–people say hello and stop and talk.
Students are involved in a lot of service opportunities in the town. They have fun, but are focused on doing well in classes (for the most part). Many go on to pursue graduate degrees in professional schools (medical, law, business) or other graduate programs. Davidson has a fantastic placement record for professional and grad schools. Most students pursue study abroad: summer, semester, or year. It is easy to craft your own independent study (and get it funded).
Of course, Davidson is not for everyone. Some people don’t like a small student body or want undergraduate programs such as engineering or nursing that Davidson doesn’t offer.
Davidson LOVES if you show interest. I would recommend that you ask the Admissions Office for the name of a Davidson student who could answer some of your questions. There is a program where seniors work in the Admissions Office, so they should be willing to share their experiences. Or you could reach out to your Admissions representative.
About ED–it appears easier to get accepted if you apply ED, but only do so if you are absolutely positive that you will attend Davidson if accepted.

@goblue8721, a visit while school is in session is a fantastic idea. If you can, try to stay overnight with a student and visit a class. Be sure to step inside the new Wall building, a state of the art science building that just opened last month. And the weather in fall is amazing.
