I live in TX and is a minority if that helps

My opinion...you are on the borderline. The rank is killing you. Write a good essay and you might get in.

I'd say you have a decent shot of getting in, but I do have some tips which may help. First, I see that you are a member or volunteer of many organizations. Here's the thing. You can say that you're in like 20 different clubs. But the admissions council doesn't really give a ****. They'd rather see that you are actively involved in 1 or 2 clubs. To show that, try to gain a leadership position (president, treasurer, committee chairman, etc..) Secondly, I would try to raise your numbers. Try to get a higher score on the SAT and since it's your senior year, it may not very difficult to try to climb higher as far as your rank goes. Chances are many seniors will probably be slacking off, so there's your chance to get high grades as well as a higher rank. Your placing in the art show does carry some weight. Are you planning on being a fine arts major? And I also see that you are in IB? I hated IB, by the way. But SMU absolutlely LOVES IB kids. Depending on your scores, you can get credit for some classes as well as scholarship money! So do well on those tests. Make sure you write a unique personal statement that really elicits your personality. Oh and showing enthusiasm for SMU really tickles them to the bone; they love it (but don't exaggerate--talk about a SPECIFIC program(s) that you're interested in, such as vocal performance). Also, make sure you get some excellent, enthusiastic teacher recommendations! Hope this helps. Lemme know if you have any more questions. Good luck!

thanx for the post pdesai06, do u go to smu??

I do go to SMU. It's pretty awesome. Lemme know if you have any more questions.

What are the pros and cons about smu... is it true that the people there are super rich and stuck up? Also, is smu generous in giving financial aid, especially to middle class students?

SMU is very generous in their financial aid. That's partly the reason why I chose to come here. As for your former question, I haven't been here that long. I mean it's only been about a month and I can't really tell you the pros and cons. Yes, many kids here are super rich and some have very obnoxious, stuck-up personalities. It's quite irritating sometimes. But, that shouldn't get in the way of finding some good friends and doing well in school. SMU has A LOT of resources for you to use: libraries, media centers, athletic center, gyms, and the professors are always willing to help if you're willing to let them. Lemme know if there's anything you'd like to know.
