Help!!!!

I am trying to make sense of this information

According to Usnews, Duke is 8th. But according to a top 500 world university report, Duke is 31

University of California San Diego is 13 in World Universities

Carngie Mellon, which ranks 21st in USNews, is 56 in World Universities.

Umich which is 24 in USnews, is 21 in World Universities

UCBerkeley is in the low 20s in USnews. In world Universities, it's 4th

UCLA is 14th in World Universities.

MIT, Stanford, Harvard and Cornell are more or less same.

MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and UCBerkeley are the only ones that score above 50% in academic quality

Some ivies, like Brown and Darmouth don't even figure in the top 50 universities.

It's quite simple.
Us News is good.
World university rankings are bad.

Understand? Good.

You honestly cannot correlate one set of rankings to another; the criteria (and sometimes the reported data) are different.

yea if u like weird rankings that shouldn't affect ur decision on which university is better, choose the world universities that rank UCSD over Ivies.

If you want rankings that actually might help you see the right methodology and reflects common knowledge among elites, then choose Us News.

Among Uber elites (i.e., the member of National Research Councils), the following schools are very prestigious:

Engineering: MIT-Berkeley-Stanford-Caltech

Hard Sciences (inc. Math): MIT-Caltech-Berkeley-Princeton-Harvard-Stanford-Chicago

Biological Sciences: Harvard-MIT-Berkeley-Stanford-UCSD

Social Sciences: Berkeley-Harvard-Chicago-Stanford-Michigan-Wisconsin

Humanities : Harvard-Berkeley-Princeton-Columbia-Cornell

of entity: school

5: Berkeley
4: Harvard, Stanford
3: MIT,
2: Caltech, Princeton, Chicago
1. Columbia, Cornell, Michigan, Wisconsin, UCSD

The upshot is that rankings can be misleading, so if you base a college choice on it rather than fit, you might do yourself a diservice.

dont worry. rankings are extremely flawed.

Pulchritude, I assume you're referring to the Shanghai Jiao Tong rankings? If so, you can completely ignore them. It "ranks" universities based on how many Nobel and Field Prizes they've won and how often their researchers are cited in scientific journals...needless to say, it's not a very reliable ranking. For what it's worth, THES ranks Duke the 13th best university in the world.

Rabban, do you type that out each time, or do you just copy and paste? Stanford and MIT beat Berkeley for grad school, btw.

To your great dismay, i usually have my secretary typed for me ;)
Every time i see ur sn, it reminds me of barbra streisand's songbird. why? :)

Songbird sings from the heart
Each word can tear you apart
I sing - you sing along
You find your life in my song
When you need the strength to carry on
You've got me to turn to
With the songs that I sing
And the magic they bring
They've helped you be strong now
The song sets you free
But who sings to me
I'm all alone now
Who sings for songbird
Sometimes
When I'm all alone
I sing my saddest song
Lonely, and no one can see
This time the song is for me
I can touch your secret place inside
And still you don't know me
With the songs that I sing
And the magic they bring
You've learned to be strong now
The song sets you free
But who sings to me
I'm all alone now
Where is my songbird
Who sings his song for me

Aw, thanks. :D
