So...
1. How is my stat? Is it too low?
2. If so, will you recommend me some schools? THey should be academic.
3. Any comments/recommendations?

THANKS!

What school in Korea do you go to? Is it just a regular school?

Yeah, it's a public middle school.

Although I'm not fully aware of the schools that you have written for admission, I think the stats are ok. Even though the first B COULD be a setback (don't think it will that much), the fact that your grades rose is a sign of a determined student. Now, the best will be keeping those grades up as an A.

I'll write more about the awards and EC's later. Need to return to a group meeting.

THanks! I need to sign off, too.
Gotta go to church!

I forgot one thing. I took TOEIC when I was in fifth grade. I got 850/990 which is similar to TOEFL PBT 588.

I think your biggest challenge is going to be the fact that you are applying as an international, from Korea and you need Financial Aid. Admissions to boarding schools are very competitive from Korea -- and schools have limited numbers of student visas they can have. With so many kids applying from Korea that can pay full-freight (and many boarding schools do not give any financial aid for internationals) I think you need to do some serious research on the possibilities.

When you say your dad only earns $5000 a year -- you might want to talk to the schools you are interested in. Very few schools give out full awards -- most schools will meet about 85% of your demonstrated need or less. so you can plan on school costing about $2500 and more each year, plus the cost of travel to and from the school. if you dad only makes $5000 a year -- I just don't see how that is possible.

i don't mean to be so negative -- but you also need to be realistic. You can do your best at applications, but make sure you have some excellent safety choices.

I emailed a lot of schools about the possibility of receiving financial aid despite being international, and I made a list based on what they told me. I'll pm it to you if you want. Some schools outright told me that no Korean applicant ever receives aid (even if they do offer grants to citizens of other countries).

Deerfield and Hotchkiss currently have international students receiving full rides + extras, but obviously it's very hard to get in. Hotchkiss isn't even need blind. Try St. Andrews-Sewanee if you can afford around $12-15,000 a year.

Does your family have savings or something? Does your mom work? I don't know what the cost of living is in Korea, but from where I live, $5,000 a month would put you in the upper-middle class bracket.

thank you all.
hsmomstef- I didn't say that my dad earned 5000$/year...
He earns 5000$/month.
However, I have heard that he is going to shift his job to some other place next year, so I believe that his monthly pay will decrease slightly.
Cate_intl, thank you so much for such helpful information. Could u pm the school list to me? I'd really appreciate it.
St.Andrews-Sewanee seems ok, except it doesn't seem to be the "right" school.
Besides, the tuition would still cost a LOT, about 34950$...
Is there a chance for me going to MPS, EMS, Purnell, or Foxcroft?
I have a "all-girls school" kinda-thing.

Check your pm box later... I'll send it once I finish updating the list.

What I meant about St. Andrews-Sewanee is that the school can meet your needs if you only need a couple thousand $$ (but an international family would still need to pay a minimum of $12-15,000). Since it's not really the right fit...this point is, well, pointless.

I'm assuming that EMS is EWS. (Correct me if I'm wrong, though) Emma Willard's financial aid is almost exclusively limited to domestic students; certain years there will be an exception for one or two international students who will receive aid. I liked EWS too, but the possibility of receiving aid is barely there.

Purnell does not offer aid to internationals. I can't remember if it's Miss Hall's or Miss Porter's (I accidentaly deleted their replies), but from what I know grants can only cover until 50% of tuition. I'm not sure if that matters for your family or not...

How about Oldfields School in Glencoe, MD? 10% of international students are currently receiving aid. You should ask the Admins about Korean applicants, because they told me they try to limit the percentage of students per country, and Korea and Mexico routinely send in the most applications.

Madeira School in McLean, VA also offer aid to internationals. I read it somewhere in their website, and there's a current senior who posts in CC.

Foxcroft has a VERY small amount available to international students. (The admin typed 'very' in all caps when she emailed me. haha) There is one international student who is receiving a merit scholarship. That scholarship will not be available until she graduates in 2010.

There are a few other all girls schools which offer FA to internationals that I can't rememer. I'll just pm you.

What other schools are you looking at? Are you open to co-ed?

Good luck!

I am open to co-ed, except that the "good" schools are very hard to get into.
EMS was a typo, you were right..
I really like MPS.. I guess I could afford 20000$..

onelittlepanda -- sorry, I read that wrong. It was late and I wasn't paying much attention.

it looks like you got some great information from cate -- I would suggest that if you really want to attend boarding school in the US, that you apply to quite a few places and really look at schools where the possibility of financial aid is there AND not as many kids apply for it. Look outside of New England and California. You might not think it is as good of a fit -- but you might have a better chance of going.

I am not saying to not apply to those schools where you really think you fit int -- but that if your school at home isn't where you want to attend, think of boarding schools that might be a fit just fine if you don't have a better alternative.

Emma Willard is offering a scholarship to an international -- but it looks like it is for 10th grade and up Giving to Emma Willard

hsmomstef, thank you for your words..
I really appreciate it.
Could you suggest some schools that are outside New England and California that are good??

madeira madeira madeira!!!!

seriously though, it has everything you want. its the BEST all girls school, not really in New England (DC/northern VA is awesome) and we have a lot of south korean girls! my first roommate was from s.korea.

you should most definitely check into it/ask me questions. haha.

cate_intl,

I'm impressed. You may have a future as an educational consultant!

inspiration08, I checked madeira and it's awesome!
Although I'm not sure if I am eligible to go there..

Can anyone evaluate my eligibility and tell me my matches, reaches, and safety?
Things to add on my list of ec and all that:
some computer certifications of qualification for powerpoint and word.
photoshop as hobby
plays table tennis at times(I just learned it from school in p.e.)
chinese characters qualifications(which I got a long time ago, but it is still credited in Korea..)

you seem qualified to me...my middle school grades, if i remember correctly, seem pretty similar to mine. but you've won more awards.

are you going to take SSATs?

Yes, I have no choice but to because many schools require me to do so, including MPS, where I want to go so BADLY! :)

well thats good, if you get high scores that will really strengthen your applications.

and i mean your MS grades, haha.
