Help!

My parent makes money in the foreign country, and i've filed FAFSA (i'm a u.s. citizen btw). But on the fafsa, I reported that my parent makes certain amount of money and that he will not file the U.S. tax return (b/c he files it in the foreign country). And FAFSA won't give EFC...what should i do?

Thanks in advance,

Your US citizen (or US permanent resident) parents should be filing a US tax return every single year. Whether they owe US taxes is a whole 'nother thing. That depends on how much money they make abroad, and the tax treaties between the two countries. In fact, if your parents have income from interest, capital gains, etc. they may very well owe some US tax on that income. Go to Internal Revenue Service to find out how to file a US tax return when you are living abroad.

As to how FAFSA will analyze your parents' income, you should email them and ask what to do.

My parents are not U.S. citizens nor permanent resident.....

Thanks for the reply!

Since you are a citizen, but your parents aren't, you need to contact FAFSA and your colleges/universities directly about your situation. You may have to work with them a bit as it is not very common one.

Good Luck!
