Help!!

for people who have had some expireance with the test can u give a little advice on how to study for this???

Praaaaaaaaaaaaaaactice :)

CR -READ READ READ. Look up words you don’t know and read them again in context. I would NOT reccomend trying to memorize long wordlists you’re going to forget anyways. Read as widely as you can - newspaper, literature (classical literature is always hard and will make SAT material feel like a walk in the park), magazines - anything. You’ll increase ur CR score and learn a lot along the way.

Math - Practice, Practice, Practice. The same concepts are tested, just in different ways. Get the basics down and then get the advanced stuff down. Once you practice you’ll notice shortcuts and little tricks that can save you a couple minutes which is an eternity in SAT time. Make sure you know WHY you got certain questions wrong. Focus on your weakness. There is no point in practicing geometry if you are really good at geometry. Again, practice makes perfect (or close to it!).

Writing - Again, practice and practice some more. For me, I always mess up similiar types of writing questions so I have been practicing those.

Essay - Look at samples and see what people did to get a 12, or see what they DIDN’T do and got a low score. Practice writing an essay, CollegeBoard has a grading service you can use.

Most importantly, remember you control the test, don’t let it control you.

You should try surfing the rest of these forums… but here’s some starting tips:
Buy a book of real SAT’s or some SAT practice tests (try Barron’s or the Princeton Review’s) and do them. Do each section and then review every single question, even the ones you got right. Also, time yourself and pace yourself. The more you practice, the better you’ll get at pacing yourself and recognizing patterns in the types of questions.
Also, memorize vocabulary words (there’s lots of SAT vocab dictionaries out there, and Dark Knight did some research on which ones were good, if you can find that post), read lots of books (and there’s an SAT reading list at the college board’s website), and do math. There’s really only one way to increase your math score, and that’s by practicing. I’m using the Art of Problem Solving books to help me get better at math, but that’s just learning, the tricky part (for me at least) is not making careless mistakes. The easiest part of the whole thing is the grammar section, all the questions are the same.
There’s all these other things you can do, just read through all the CC forums and you’ll see.

BTW, to add to my last post just want to show you how my strategies helped me:

CR
Before Reading Heavily = 570
After lots of reading and an increased vocab = 770

M
Before lots of practice and mastering concepts I was weaker in = 610
AFTER = 760

W
Before - 670 Essay 12 (I have always been a good writer, but I did not study as hard as I should have for MC)

After - 800 Essay 12

I think Arachnotron summed that up pretty well

you might want to check out Xiggi’s thread (it’s stickied). That’s usually a good place to start. If you have any questions after that, feel free to ask us.

Yea, just practice with old practice tests. And also read over “Xiggi’s Method.” Really helpful.
