Hello everyone,

I'm having a bit of a problem with my current academic goal which is to attend UCLA for my B.A in Psychology next year. I have great grades but I recently discovered that my college doesn't offer a winter session (which I was planning on taking 2 core prereq's). I'm now screwed because I will be behind when it comes to this major.

However, if I change my major to Political Science, I will be fine. It's just that I want to study Psychology, but I really don't think I want to wait another year to transfer. Knowing this, Political Science doesn't seem that bad; just boring.

So my question is what would you do?

A) Wait another year for UCLA Psychology
B) Suck it up and attend UCLA for Political Science
C) Attend a different university for Psychology (although Im not entirely sure which one I would consider)

I recommend majoring in something that you have passion and interest for. I would either wait another year for UCLA Psychology, or consider going to a different university and sticking with Psychology. If you major in a subject that you find is boring, you won’t do well. Always follow your heart. :)

I would go for psych still and just make sure to cap your units so you bring as much over as possible. Spread the classes out more so it’s easier, and get a job if you don’t have one already. Other than that, enjoy some free time.

Yes, I recommend that you get a job also, as well as looking at some scholarships. It’ll help you pay for school later.

well if there’s only 2 more classes u need to take, why not just take one in the fall and the other in the spring? i found out my cc is not having winter either so i was in a position where i had to quit my job so i can take 24 units in the fall so i can finish in 2 yrs. with budget cuts and all, my cc wont allow me to take more than 19 units in the spring. thats y im taking 24 in the fall. u gotta plan ahead of these things…but poli sci isn’t that bad. staying an extra yr is very costly, the opportunity cost is the income u would be missing out on when u would have graduated a yr sooner. so around like $40k to $60k? (iono how much shrinks make)

Without the winter session I will not have enough units to transfer if I took the classes in the spring…so I’m pretty much out of luck.

Oh well, I guess getting a job wouldn’t be that bad. I did it for two years before I started CC and I dread the thought of being in that position again (my situation is unique). Waiting through 2010 all the way to fall 2011 seems so hard! Not to mention that I’m 21 now.

I’m starting to really dislike Los Angeles; I should go to NYU instead. :)

lakerforever, I want to be a CIA psychologist. They make about 100k a year.

Why dont you just apply this year and see what happens? I applied as a MIMG major and I didnt have the whole physics sequence done which is a pre req and I was admitted. You dont HAVE to have them all done, they just recommend it. I did have IGETC done though.

In the TAG it states that all prep courses must be completed by the spring before transferring. Did you have IGETC done when you applied?

UCLA doesn’t have TAG, but you should finish the pre-reqs nonetheless. I know plenty of people who were rejected because they were missing 1 or 2. =/

If your dream is to attend UCLA as a Psych major I’d suggest just waiting. One year sounds like a long time, but it’ll give you an opportunity to spread out your courses and boost your GPA a bit. I’m speaking from experience here.

If you want to get back on track, I would suggest taking one or two more courses during Fall and Spring (as someone mentioned earlier). But if you think it would be too much for you to handle, what about online courses? I hear they’re easier (never taken it, so don’t mark my word). I think SMC is having a winter session (not sure on this either). But if this is all too hard, don’t overestimate yourself and take your time. It will be worth it in the end.

By TAG I meant Transfer Admission Guide… my mistake.

I think I’m going to SMC for winter and applying to UCLA this November anyway. That’s what my heart is telling me to do. Hopefully I will not have any problems getting the classes I desperately need in the winter.

So you’ll be applying to UCLA as a Poli Sci major after all?

No, I will take the classes I need for Psych this Winter at SMC and use Political Science as a back up because I’m in TAP.

Good. Yes, I would stick with Psychology. Like I said before, if you major in something you’re not passionate about, it is likely you won’t do well. So it’s good you are sticking with something you enjoy. :)

I Agree with you 100%. Thank you.

You’re most welcome! Let me know if you have any more questions. :)
