Hey...I'm going to be a high school junior this sept. and I want to know what I should work on to try to get into Columbia...also...I want to know how much new york state regents scores count during the admissions process...i have a very good average/rank...good ecs...and etc. except my regents scores were not too good and they make my transcript look bad....I also want to know if I take the SAT IIs for all the subjects I messed up in for the regents, will the SAT II scores make up for the bad regents scores...please respond...thanks...

NYS Regents are important (since they factor into your GPA and are probably shown separately on your transcript). Great SATII scores in those subjects will definitely help, but I recommend that you take them only if you think that you will score 700+ on them.

the nys regents scores in my school aren't factored into our GPA, but they are shown separately

Strange...someone once told me that regents (state given exams) play no difference in application
i mean, not only nyc students apply to Columbia, and they didnt take any Regents exams, and..well, you get my point

the Regents often replace final exams in many schools. they don't count nearly as much as other standardized exams, but top colleges expect you to do well on them since they know how easy the exams are. if you get a 70, it will matter. your Regents scores should, for the most part, be 90 or above to apply to Columbia.

all my regents grades are in the 90s except for one...the math b exam...i got a 71 on that but also like most of the state failed...should i take the exam again because my school allows you to do that...do you think that if i get a better score on my regents and take the math IIC SAT IIs and get a good score (700+) will help?

if you think you can do significantly better, then take it again. if not, take the SATII MathIC or MathIIC (it doesn't really matter which one you take unless you're going for engineering).

but do you think that one regents score will hurt my chances of getting in?

As long as you aren't majoring in math or engineering.

The SAT I and SAT II's would take priority over the Regents. If you do well on the math tests, they'll figure you just had a bad day or something; but since you'd be capable of better work, I'd recommend taking it again as long as you have the time. But if you don't do so well on the SAT I/II, then your Regents score would make sense and there'd be no reason to take it again; the SAT I/II would "hurt" your chances as much as you're thinking the Regents might.

In the end, one Regents score won't make a significant difference.
