Help?

I have been planning on going to UNC since April, and I just got off of the wait list at Duke. I am in the honors program at UNC and was one of 20 students selected for a first year journalism program there as well. I am interested in studying political science and journalism, and I don't know which school I want. I need advice.

Are you in-state? Personally if I were in-state I would choose UNC over Duke. However nationally Duke has higher prestige. Have visited both schools? They each have very different atmospheres and it just depend on which you think would fit you best.

Sorry, I know that’s not of much help but just some things to think about.

I’m out of state. And yeah I visited both and I liked the atmosphere of both, although I think UNC seemed slightly friendlier and a warmer atmosphere?

UNC is known for its journalism program. It think its somewhere in the top 5. I’d definitely go with UNC, unless you feel a lot more comfortable at Duke. Also, if money matters, choose the less expensive one.

For journalism, go with UNC. It would be a no brainer for me.

The J-School at UNC Chapel Hill is in the top 5. Duke’s journalism doesn’t place in the rankings.

The Daily Tar Heel ranks #1, ahead of The Harvard Crimson & Yale Daily News as of Nov 2009

When students in the Ral/Dur/CH area talk about pursuing a career in journalism, they are hoping to get in UNC’s J-school

TOP school (even off the cap than duke) for journalism. With journalism you can get yourself involved with international relations, executive positions from the degrees you receive, and with only 20 students chosen for such a program; you will be treated like a gem. I honestly think that the professors for poli sci and journalism will pay extra attention to you at UNC and i’ve heard this a lot from students who have gone there. However, the journalism classes are itself very big (although only some will contain like over 100?). But honestly, your journalism and PS (poli sci) from UNC will go a long way. Duke is more known for medical (so i mean you may be the minority degree there wheres at UNC YOU ARE THE BIG THING!!). Consider this last phrase and remember to choose a college not by its average ranking but for its specific ranking for your field, cause that is what future employers will look for. They will understand that by going to UNC you were serious about journalism and that you have the dominant talent in your field. Even princeton gets astonished when they hear you have the UNC degree (they may be surprised to hear that you graduated from Duke but even more surprised with a journalism degree or poli scie degree from UNC than there). I’m not going to push you to your decision but I feel that UNC is FUN and really really takes journalism seriously (even the ivies look at its degree with huge respect; that says something about it).=) hope i made the choice easier for you! Otherwise, if your In-state, go back and get the info yourself if you want to assure your decision (no hurry with such a dilemma).
