I’m an international, seeking aid.

I got wait-listed at all my colleges this year. In all probability I wont make it and will have to enroll in a college in my country.

I had not applied to Brown last year. This time round, I’m thinking of submitting an ED application there.

But, that will only be possible if I start off as a freshman.

So here’s my question: Can I start off as a freshman? [Given that I am willing to lose the few months of college-work that I will be engaging in back here]

The Brown website says that an applicant is considered a transfer if he/she has completed AT LEAST a year in another college. If I do submit my application to Brown this year, I will have attended college for only a few months.

I’m so confused!

If you want to start as a freshman at Brown, you take a year off of school, but if you enroll in another college this fall you apply as a transfer, which is separate from freshman admissions. I think people usually transfer into other colleges after their sophomore year, but I’m not sure on this.

I know an international who applied to Brown as a transfer after completing one year at his home country flagship university. Denied. The next year he was attending 2nd year at university, but applied to Brown as a freshman, admitted. I don’t know if he did this on his own or the admission office suggested it, but they were fully aware of his status. He was very successful at Brown, graduated with honors and phi beta kappa. Seeing his intelligence and his work ethic, he would have been fine as a transfer the first time, but maybe they couldn’t tell. And yes, he did receive aid.

So, I would contact the admission office and ask if you can apply as a freshman next round.

ava1992: transfer students frequently apply after freshman year as well as sophmore year.
